Lest we forget

Bit of a first for Anzac Day tomorrow...no public services...

There will be many who march, & those of us who like to attend their local service, that will take the current public gathering restrictions in their stride, but the other night i was listing to a radio program over here where a lot of service men & women were getting a shout out,--it really was eye-opening--or should i say "ear"-opening stuff.

The guy announcing all the veterans names made mention that for some of these older blokes, not being able to march or attend a service is really going to be an emotional struggle...sounds like an obvious statement i guess, but it got me to thinking a little deeper about it--something i usually reserve for that minutes silence because of the fog it can generate--& realise that for some of these guys, not being able to attend the Anzac day march would probably bring up some conflicting feelings of guilt & remorse that would be in additional burden to the usual.

So thought id put out an early little thought & cheers to those folks either directly or indirectly affected by these restrictions, who, for fault of their own, will be denied their usual Anzac Day Cathartic experience tomorrow... :drinks:

Ill be on the couch with a coffee in the morning & no doubt stand up to add a little extra fog for the sunshine to lift as that bugle squirts out its little spine chilling, reality checking, dawn number ... :drinks:

___Lest We Forget___ :drinks:

_______

Also, i heard a snippet of a show/reading on ABC radio early this morning--well it was almost an audio dramatisation, of some transcribed letters & experiences of diggers & their families while being seperated by war...it really sounded like a great & ideal accompanyment to Anzac day..

I think i heard them say its going to be played in full at "5.30"...but i dont know what station or if its tommorow AM or PM... :unknown:
Anyway, id assume it should be played on a national basis for those interested--given its directl transcriptions & experiences put into a dramatisation type segment, its gotta be better than commercial stations competing for their usual sensation BS anyway...
And for what its worth, i heard it on ABC Radio Eyre Peninsula this morning...hopefully thats playing at 5.30 in the morning...

If anyone knows more about this & when its going to be played, id be keen to know more...

Cheers

There's been a push on social media for an Anzac day challenge... the idea is that everyone lights a candle in their driveway instead of going to the parade some people have even made poppy wreaths for the event. I know it's not that same as going to the service but I think it's in the spirit of Anzac by making the best of a bad situation

Stix,
ABC posted this today... https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-24/ ... s/12174808

The National Commemorative Service will be held from 5.30am AEST.

It's being broadcast from inside the Australian War Memorial (AWM) in Canberra, and you can watch it live on ABC TV, listen on ABC radio, or stream on ABC's YouTube or Facebook feeds.

If you're not in the eastern states, no worries.

The National Commemorative Service will be broadcast at 5.30am in your local time no matter where you are in the country.

For South Australians, the dawn service at the Adelaide National War Memorial (which is closed to the public) will be broadcast live from 6:00am ACST.

Listen to it on radio with ABC Adelaide and ABC South Australia, or catch the live stream on ABC Adelaide's Facebook page.

RSL Perth's Commemorative Service will be broadcast live from 6:30am local time on ABC Perth and ABC Western Australia radio, and live on ABC Perth's Facebook page too.

Victorians can catch the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance service on ABC Melbourne and ABC Victoria Facebook pages from 6:10am local time and on ABC Melbourne radio from around 6:15am.

Auntie is broadcasting the national service in full, but if I read it right, if you tune it at 6am, you'll catch the Ode, the Last Post, the Minute's silence, and Reveille.

Its crazy to think that when I was a lad WW1 vets were rather common and Vietnam vets were not even 45. Now there are no WW1 vets and the Vietnam vets are getting old.

My grandad is German, his dad was also German, and he was captured in 1917. He became friendly with some Queenslanders and after the war he moved from Germany to Queensland and that's how I came to be many years later of course. Got to love QLD!!!

Given the cv situation and I know it’s not in the realm of possible - but id enjoy seeing those who are in a safe position to do so, and only those who could safely do so, Fire a single shot from a centre fire, in unison, at a predefined time (6.00am?) out of respect for our vets.

I did a job at a new clients place a while back. During my work , I saw, on the mantle piece, a notice of service, a letter from Australian Government, a notation from the then Australian Prime Minister. It was all directed to the son of these good people. He was killed in active service in the middle east.
A fine young man lost forever. I will never forget the sorrow that still showed in the eyes of this soldiers parents.
I remember this every Anzac Day........not only for these people, but for others in the same situation.

Will not be a soul still a sleep in our little village at 0530. The primary school will be playing this broadcast over their fire/emergency PA system, which is heard in every corner over the village.

I dont see an issue with small groups in small towns. Apply distancing rules.
I dont understand why the RSL and Gov was so stricked about it.

Perhaps too hard to manage.

It is our day - a day to remember with affection the courage of people and the value of friendship - to honour the dead and to acknowledge those who suffer still from the effects of war. We do not celebrate victory or glorify war - we celebrate the human spirit - the spirit of ANZAC.

"No surprise there mate seeing who the PM is."
Hey AussieCapitalist, pardon my ignorance but why is that? I'm not much into politics, but didn't Brendon Abbott (ex leader of the Liberal party) used to run the Australian War Memorial? Would have thought that the Liberals would be right behind this stuff? Just asking mate.

Oops, sorry AC, just realised you were commenting on NZ not Aus. Wouldn't have a clue about their politics - or ours for that matter. Disregard my comment. Long day chipping and spraying lantana, think I'll go to bed now before I embarrass myself further.
