Thoughts on leather sheath blunting knife?

I've just picked up a new skinning knife which came with the following leather sheath

It's a bit snugger than I might have expected, the edge of the blade is pushed against the interior curve of the sheath when housed.

What are peoples experience with something similar, and did you notice any premature blunting of the blade due to a similar sheath and the edge rubbing or sitting against it?

I won't be taking the knife in and out endlessly, it'll only get used a dozen times a year, if that, in all likelihood, but it got me wondering.

Give it a touch on a stone just before use ? - but yeah - I get what your saying...spend an hour getting the edge like a razor, sheath it and it’s gone backwards...but not much more than cutting skin on an animal.

I have never given it any thought beforehand. Dirt in there will def be a prob. If A snug fit stops movement in there that’s got to be a good thing

l dont really think you have much to worry about, maybe soak the pouch in vegetable oil to get a better fit while the knife is in

my knife setup is similar and it stays ridiculously sharp for ages, its mainly used for cutting throats and taking heads and hocks off
l would probably sharpen it once every 8-10 deer

Yeh, or Neats foot oil.

Just wondering. That second picture looks like a change purse. Smallest knife ever?

I have recently pressed my Puma Hunters Pal into service. (It was a safe queen for 25 yesrs Lol) The sheath is the same with a strip of leather down the side. It's like that so the edge doesnt rub on rivits or to protect the stitching, if any.

Pretty sure Puma know what they are doing.

Yep. I'm not OCD about having a razors edge on it permanently. 1 slide in the sheath, 1 run down a piece of skin, probably same-same.

Good point. 1 contact on the way in to stop multiple contacts of it bumping around.

Good to know. 8 deer would be a years work for me, if not more.

I have recently pressed my Puma Hunters Pal into service.

Puma has been on my radar for a while, their White Hunter as a heavy duty unit, and SGB Skinner in particular.

I wasn't actually familiar with Benchmade before finding them in the shop, the quality is immediately obviously though.

This particular one is a perfect fit for me, both using the blade on up and down strokes. Ergonomics is a seriously underrated element when it comes to working knives, I reckon.

Very happy to have found it when I did, but may add a second larger knife to the kit in due course.

I’ve got a couple steep country - bench made blades and find them the perfect all rounder knives. Steel and edge / balance is just brilliant.

Bought my white hunter back in the 60,s. Thought for life. But it was stolen from my donga when I was in Bougainville. I was devastated but it was the only thing they stole. No they got some booze too.
