l dropped my rifle

l was taking my rifle in its bag to the car carrying it by a shoulder strap, the strap broke and my rifle fell hitting at the barrel
when l had a look this is what l found

Hey MM , this might be a great excuse to upgrade to a nice laminate stock . Get onto hunting haven in Sydney, they take orders and import a few times a year. That’s if covid hasn’t stuffed that up

This is what worries / scares me with timber stocks - they look beautiful, they really do, sometimes to good to use. Hopefully, there’s a way to fix without too much agony.

That's why I'd never use anything other than a leather sling with brass hardware and I'll be removing the plastic buckle from the shoulder sling on the gun bag that has one when I get home tonight ... bloody plastic junk

The upside is you now have a good excuse to upgrade your stock.

Yesterday I dropped my guitar , and then I dropped my keyboard on top of it ......I hunt Solo with one up the spout and a rifle slung over my shoulder .....but if ever I have somebody walking behind me it’s always empty , just in case my sling breaks and the but hits the ground while it’s pointing at my tag along mate

so l've been busy
that vid of anvil is a beauty in2anity, thanks for posting it

very unlucky angle Tassie, but the stock was cracked in transit when l bought it, just not as bad as this, so already had been repaired
the rifle is worth a new stock but l need to be able to use it now
so l've been busy with some coarse thread brass screws, glue, some files and sandpaper

When I saw those screws poking thu I said out loud holy f. But I relaxed once I saw it sanded and on the mend

Reckon aye WM that’s what separates the men from the boys - knowing the right oils and wax to use, that’s some grand wushu master stuff right there. But I bet you know a thing or two about such matters WM!

No mate, I'm still learning although I seem to be having a little success with rubbing-in linseed oil. Seems to be waterproof anyway but I have bitten off more then I can chew in renovating some checkering. A crook back is hindering me partly and it will be a long story, when I get round to telling it.

Yep I dropped my rifle when training at the School of Infantry in Singleton many many years ago. Can’t say it was a pleasant experience afterwards.

Why didn’t you screw from top to bottom.? You seemed to have missed the cracks and just gone the same way as the break, not through it.

But the crack plane is on the vertical? surely the clamping force needs to be perpendicular to the fracture? (like he’s done)

Nice repair mate. Least it's got character and a good story now haha. Can always get a stock made up or have a hunt for one for sale. Could cost you abit though. I wouldn't worry, the repair looks good

The first photo looks like vertical cracks with horizontal screws , which is good. The photo with the screws protruding look like horizontal cracks and horizontal screws which is bad. Maybe it’s just the photo.

I’ll go out on a limb, and say MM has done this once or 97 times (or similar work) previously...reckon he has his cracks just where he needs them...(craps I have a gutter mind).

these cracks were from transit and were not affected by the drop from transit when l bought the rifle
the cracks you are talking about were glued when l did the first repair and have held up without screws
its lucky that this rifle does not have a mag well and is a single shot

l have finished the repair,
l do see it as a rough job,
l used the large thread coarse brass screws on purpose because with the glue and screw l wanted as much bite and glue as possible
the wrist is pretty solid and l'm sure it will be fine although l need to shoot it to check it out, the bedding seems to be as it was
l have checked out another stock for it and maybe putting in a request at christmas, if l be good l may be lucky
the reason l have put this up is to show you can do repairs yourself, you've just got to have a crack at it and really if it doesn't work out your no worse off
