Great bit of DIY there. I think sometimes people get tied up in having "the best". If it works it's fine with me.

Iv'e been having a crack at leather work of late and it aint hard to get a reasonable job done.

Is that vegetable tanned leather? Or is it chrome tanned?

Its veg tanned leather, I got told in my early days of leathering that its best for moulding, dyeing and tooling. Tbh its all Ive ever used.

Slightly off topic, but I think you might have an interest Crackthump.

I have a recipe for a great "dye" for vegetable tanned leather.


Get a jar or plastic container that you are willing to sacrifice (you could use one of your polymer.......OK-OK I'll stop) - put a handful of iron or steel nails in it (or fill with steel wool) then fill it with white vinegar. Don't seal the top all the way as it will need to expand and let off some bubbles. Leave it for a week or two. If it looks like a rusty feral disaster it is done. Drain off the vinegar through a coffee filter into another container.
Brush your veggie tan leather with the vinegar-iron solution. Within a few seconds seconds the leather will turn a beautiful deep dark blue black. The vinegar is acidic so immediately after dyeing mix about 3 table spoons of bicarb soda with 1lt water and brush on to neutralise the acid and save the leather from deterioration.

The vinegar dissolves the iron, and the iron reacts chemically with the tannins in the bark used as the leather tanning agent. Not only does it dye the leather - the new chemical- ferric acetate- is an antibiotic which preserves the leather better than tanning alone. It also dies the entire leather thickness- not just the surface of the leather. This recipe is has been around since the 8th century and produces the most amazing blue black colour that looks even better when oiled or treated with dubbin/saddle soap.

This works only with veggie tanned leather as chromed tanned leather does not have the tannins to react with the iron.

To be clear you need to brush the vinegar that you drained off onto the leather- not the rusty mess left over after draining. Phew....close one.

@Oldbloke .. nice work on those sheaths man. Like you said before, with a little effort and patience you can get some damn decent results without a million dollars in tools.

Out of curiosity, what are you using for stuffing under the cheek risers.? (They look good laced up like that. #RifleCorsets)

Using the high density foam from one of those cheap roll up camping mattresses. About 8mm thick.

All of them are hand saddle-stitched on all my pistol leather before I started it I got some tips off the local leather guy in town which made all the difference only mistake I made on that was the actual magazine holster I think is on the left I had the leather the wrong way around with the rough side in .

Makes all of mine look rough as guts including the magazine holster I have never seen anybody do saddle stitch like him or as fast he is amazing to watch.
