Well, I went out for a short whistle tonight on a small property. A mates. My reward for whistling was a bloody fox was calling back to me for about 5 minutes. Talk about frustrating. Must have thought I wanted a root. :violin:

Bought a new rifle, an inexpensive American Ruger Compact in 308. Probably one of the best shooting rifles I've used and was very affordable. Going to see what it'll do with handloads instead of bulk PPU.

Hows that?

Raises a question...
Would you rather buy an expensive rifle - expect it to shoot great and be a little...”meh”, when it does...
Or
Buy a cheap rifle, have lower expectations, be amazed when it shoots better than you thought it would?

Option two, please. Sure its not brilliant to use; the ergos are a bit strained, the trigger would be over 5lb and the fit and finish is gulag spec. The machining on the action especially is dire - cycling the bolt sounds like walking in corduroy pants; ziiip!

But... they obviously spent all the budget on the trigger and barrel. She shoots just fine. Sub-MOA with factory ammo, straight away. According to the many reviews out there this is standard for them, so not some freak occurence. The action smooths out with a bit of use, too, so that's nice... although I rather like the sound to be honest.

Which leaves me wondering... if you can do that with a $700 gun why do I need anything else? *dons flamesuit*

Haha - it’s a leading question that one...
By decision, I have all different brands of rifles and scopes.
I have some cheap stuff and I have some expensive stuff - nothing outrageous.
A friend has only Tikkas and Leupolds.
This friend can go to our private little range and consistently shoot any of his rifles to 3/4 moa at 100 All day - all his trigger pressures are the same, stocks the same, etc. I know why he does this but...meh.

I want to experience as wide a net as possible...experience great shooting firearms, poor shooting firearms and learn about them individually and learn how to get them and me to shoot well, etc. same philosophy with my scopes - I have a z5 Swarovski and to be honest - it can be a pain (parallax settings are so fine) But - I absolutely love it for being that pain...Lol.

I imagine that some ppl - go out and buy a $3000 sako, go to the range, shoot the thing very well and print clover leafs, then go home and put firearm in safe....
Then there are others. Weeeee
They buy a cheap rifle. Go to range and spray em everywhere.
Go home try different reloads, back to range, 2 groups starting to look ok, back home, more development with powder, bsck to range...spray em all over the shop - s**t!!! should a bought sako...
back home, find scales were rooted, reload more, groups getting better, go back home and change up the seating depths, bsck to range - SHIIIT...spraying them again arghhhb lol. Now which avenue teaches you? lol.

"Which leaves me wondering... if you can do that with a $700 gun why do I need anything else? *dons flamesuit*"

the answer boingk is you dont

but you may want :unknown:

l met a guy when l was going to the range years ago who had one of the new ruger ranch models in 308, he asked politely for a hand to sight it in
when l saw the rifle l thought this thing is a piece of crap but as he shot it my mouth dropped open at the precision, 1/4 moa at 100m factory ammo
l met him again a few weeks later and he was telling me how it only worked for one session and that it had sprayed ever since
l asked a few questions eg,, have you cleaned it, he had but he hadn't moped out the solvent so we discovered, he was a new gun guy :unknown:
so after cleaning it and patching out the solvent he went back to 1/4 moa @ 100m using factory ammo,
the guy shooting next to him had an expensive rifle that he was going to sell to buy a ruger
and l've seen plenty of sako's that do not shoot

If your $700 gun can shoot a 222, 308 and 20G great. If not you might need to spend a few bucks

No need or desire for a 222 or 20G. I'll stick with the 308. Cool vid though!

Indeed, its why I've also got some not-entirely-practical stuff like the good old 45-70 Marlin haha.
