Foundry casting

Post by on_one_wheel » 10 Sep 2020, 9:04 pm

I have an opportunity to form molds in hard sand and green sand and cast in iron, SG, aluminum, brass and gunmetal.

I'd be interested in any ideas.

If you could cast anything, what would you make firearms related but not being firearms parts.

Noisy dad was doing some casting.

What about some "O" frame Presses. If you have a lathe rest is easy to make. Good presses are expensive.

Have to be a cannon ?
Suggesting bronze rather than brass ?
I was once invited to the proof firing of a 12pdr.
Double charge and double shotted and with a long fuse we all retired to a stout bunker, after firing a qualified bloke [Digger ex AATTV] looked her over and signed off paperwork.

You could cast weights to fit popular firearms:

Rifle- bag rider weights, or weights that replace the spacers in aftermarket stocks. Or fit in the stock somewhere. If the weights had cavities to fill with lead shot to adjust weight even better. Or labelled "drill here" areas to reduce the weight.

Shotgun- A weight will fit in the stock- under the recoil pad or a pair of triangular cross section weights under the foregrip.

If you are looking to make $ I would pursue the weights that replace the spacers in aftermarket stocks. Big potential market, nobody is making them. Virgin turf.

I want a 2% commission when you make it big. Or at least a free beer. :D

I’ve still got the wooden pattern for the C frame press I made 7 years ago. That press is still in regular use. It does all my cast bullet sizing, de capping, powder compression and bullet seating. Couldn’t guess at how many cycles that press has done now but it’s gone up and down more times than Charlie Sheen in house full of hookers!
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Lol it’s spring crazy time in the fertiliser industry with much overtime being done plus At home I’m converting an open front machinery shed to a much more comfortable closed in wood workshop.
