Purchase on "BACKORDER"

Post by JesseW97 » 23 Oct 2020, 10:14 am

Hay there guys its been a few weeks now since I payed for my rifle (Tikka T3X Lite Stainless chambered in 22-250) and im still waiting anxiously to receive the email its arrived bit annoyed because I was told it would take about a week in total for it to get to the shop but its been about 3 weeks now and still nothing anyone else experienced this before? I've sent emails to the store and they told me last Friday (16/10/2020) they had a large shipment of Tikkas on the way as of that day. Do you guys think its taking so long due to the covid restrictions? I have called and they said they get them shipped up here from Melbourne, also if you guys have ever been through long "BACKORDER" waiting times share your stories.

Mate - I ordered and paid for a 45/70 on 2nd August...the same day I got my pta. It was meant to be 6 weeks at worst. It has not yet arrived and I have only 9 days left before pta runs out - I called firearms office, no exceptions for extending PTA’s...which means I may have to reapply for pta x 4 weeks...yeah, it’s frustrating.

Ive ordered some parts from VIC (no one else had them) and they sent them Express Post (usually 4 days max) and they are taking over 2 weeks to arrive, so by my math its now taking 4x longer to get things on average, #SACKAUSPOSTCEO

f*** that sucks mate I really hope it comes for you within the next 9 days I've read reviews about some people waiting 22+ weeks for s**t to come in. I just got off the phone with the store they were able to ring up there supplier for me and confirmed my rifle is on its way from Melbourne. I originally asked about the shipment of Tikkas they told me about and the ETA for that shipment is for February next year I was dreading that mine would be in that shipment luckily it isnt. They did however say if I didnt want to wait they have two Ruger M77s available in 22-250 but after reading reviews on them I just cant make up my mind I really want the Tikka but at the same time I really just want to go shooting haha (Wouldnt be an issue if SSAA would allow you to hire there guns and ammo) but apparently due to covid your only alowed to use your own firearms at the range which I think is just stupid but it is what it is. I think its best that I just keep waiting and hoping that my Tikka arrives next week.

Yeah I'll wait I do have an Air rifle I can plink with for the meantime I just miss the feel of shooting real bullets and the smell of the gun powder haha. On the plus side I go up to my local pistol range nearly every week or second week and shoot there while im on my 6 month probation so I can apply for my CAT H.

I'm still waiting for a Walther air pistol that I ordered in June, latest ETA is end of November, maybe. Fortunately I didn't submit the PTA till July so that is valid till early Jan 2021.

There was no Australian stock so the importer, Frontier Arms, had to order direct from Germany to be included in the next large shipment.
Unfortunately, due to Covid and reduced freight flights Walther couldn't find any air freight company to take firearms. The only option was sea freight which is 9 weeks plus additional wait for the ship departure and increased customs clearance delays.

My dealer says there are lots of other brands and models suffering the same problems, take a look at the dealers that list stock levels for just about anything, supplies within Australia are running low everywhere. A US style ammo shortage is likely not far away either.

For delays on firearms in Queensland we have a wonderful system called 'like for like' which lets us swap a firearm with another of the same action and caliber with no new PTA requirement. If you're stuck waiting and want to play or your PTA is about to expire you can get an equivalent firearm, preferably second hand, and swap it when your new one arrives and hopefully lose almost nothing.

Interesting so If I was to buy the Rugers they do have available after I use them and my Tikka arrives I can take the ruger back in and get a refund for it and take my Tikka home (I've already paid for the Tikka) or would I forfit the money i would spend on the ruger?

Re: Purchase on "BACKORDER"

I bought a T3X lite in 22-250 earlier this year, waited 3 months for that sucker to turn up at the shop, didn't end up getting a clear answer on exactly why it took so long, but I was 'looked after' on another purchase I made around the same time. When it finally turned up I couldn't take it home as it was early times of the covid firearm restrictions, the minute they overturned the directions and allowed people to collect firearms with pre-dated PTA's. I was there first thing to bring it home.

Hopefully you're not waiting too long mate, unless your PTA is about to expire, I would hold off on taking home another rifle in it's place.

As RC mentioned, it's best to conduct it against a second hand firearm that you're not likely to lose alot on, you're still going to be losing a few dollars between purchase and trade, unless you place it on consignment for a higher price to get back what you paid for it. It's a bit of a gamble either way.

Yeah, i think the issue was that I put my PTA in for 22-250 I should have just gone with .308 as the shop always seems to have a large stock of rifles chambered in .308 and there selling remingtons, rugers etc... for like $500-$1000. A lot of it is me having very low patience when all I want to do is go and shoot. I'm new to the shooting world and its the most fun ive ever had in my life and I just cant go shooting without owning my own gun. I know you can borrow peoples firearms and some of my family members are gun owners but they all got there rifles way back in the day (WWII rifles etc..) and I just cant see them wanting to lend me them in the case that I f*** something up with there gun which I completely understand and it doesnt help im not rural my only option is to go to the range to shoot unless I can get someone to take me up to some friends properties but there a good 3+ hour drive away and I dont have my drivers licence. I would happily go to the pistol range I attend quite often but there only open 3 days a week so I get super bored on the weekends at home just sitting on my computer all day.

There's a couple of Tikka T3 22-250 Hunters on used guns site may be of interest. Might save a bob or 2 as well...

If you bought a new rifle it would be used when you returned it so you'd take a big loss.
If you bought a second hand one you'd make a small loss when you returned it unless you can talk up a sweet deal but if you consider it the equivalent of a few weeks rifle rental it might seem reasonable.
It will depend on how many weeks you'll be using it for and what sort of deal you can negotiate on 'borrowing' a used rifle.

Put another pta in for a 308. Leave the 22.250 on "layby" until it arrives, that way if its a week or 6 months you can still shoot

depending on how friendly you are with the shop owner you may be able to talk him into putting one in store on your pta for nothing and storing it there, then like for like when yours arrives.
it won't get you shooting but at least you won't need to apply for an extension. Im not sure if this would breach any laws but it may work.

QLD dealers can process a different cat A/B/H firearm (same action and caliber) against your PTA if you get close to the 6 month mark but keep it in the store so it remains 'new' for future sale, they can then 'like for like' over to your purchased firearm when it arrives, all completely within the legislation.
A good dealer will do this sort of thing with no charge and they deserve the repeat business that results from that sort of customer service.

QLD PTAs are valid for 6 months and there is no way to get them extended, the only option there is to advise WLB that the old one expired and apply for a new one with another $40.

Haha yeah as an amateur to the sport im sure its not over for me now but the way I see it is im ready to shoot once my scope is mounted ive already got ammo so I guess when i say im fully sorted I meant for my next couple of shoots etc... I'm hoping now to get more involved in the shooting community and absorb as much information as I can. I do want to learn how to press my own ammo and everything but for now I just want to get out there with my own rifle and have some fun.

So, you've got the one and only rifle that you're ever going to need?

A lot of us have been through that stage but fortunately it doesn't last too long.
I hope you bought a safe with at least a 10 gun capacity otherwise you'll be adding the cost of another safe sooner rather than later.

Some days I wish I'd taken up something like crack cocaine instead of firearms, it would probably have been much less addictive.
