P638 Fact Sheet for Silencer (Prohibited Weapons)

Questions about New South Wales gun and ammunition laws. NSW Firearms Act 1996.

P638 Fact Sheet for Silencer (Prohibited Weapons)

Post by Shotfox » 16 Jul 2014, 2:03 pm

Fact Sheet P638 (firearms registry NSW) States that.
"If a silencer is Attachedto a firearm the firearm is classifed as a prohibited weapon by clause 10 of schedule 1 of the firearms act 1996
Therefore, to lawfully posses and use a firearm with a silencer attached a person must hold a firearm permit authorising possesion and use of the prohibited firearm in addition to the prohibited weapons permit.

Question then. Is a fully surpressed barrel legal ? As it is not an "attached silencer" it is the actual barrel of the gun

Thoughts please as I cannot seem to get an answer

If this were America, you might get away with the wording. But Being here in Australia the Beak will look at the "vibe" of the legalese, witch gives them the "right" to squew things as they see fit :( ... Besides if the barrel also acts as a sound moderator, then you still have a sound moderator attached to the firearm...

Just my 2c worth

EDIT : I was told once, a long time ago that even porting a barrel the smiths are not supposed to put in more than "so many" holes in it, sorry cant remember the number. But I heard it off a mate , and things might be wrong.

Silencers a completely legal as long as you have police approval, just like firearms. If you can justify possessing one you can have one.

Na that won't count, think more "I don't want to make others deaf, I don't want to annoy the neighbours who keep putting in noise complaints about my legal pest destruction, and shooting is the only suitable method for controlling pests on that property, baiting and trapping isn't appropriate"

I know 2 local shooters is ACT who have approval to use moderators on rimfires. They can only use those firearms on the approved properties. They can also shoot them at the range to sight them it, but can't compete with them, or use them elsewhere.

Yep - Currently have a prohibited weapons permit in the system and still waiting on approval. So far been 2 and ahalf months. Anyway thanks for the feed back guys. Think I will have to re word my question for the firearms registry about the surpressed barrel.

We just need to get them to accept "I don't want to f*** my hearing" as a justification though.

That'll be easy... :(
