Leupold VX1 or Nikon Prostaff

Post by Wilso1994 » 20 Jul 2014, 12:04 am

Long story short: I need an objective lens of 50mm or more for the type of shooting I do.

Scope A: leupold vx1 3-9x50 $525
Scope B: Nikon Prostaff 3-9x50 $325

Before anyone posts "you get what you pay for" please consider that the scope in question will more than likely always stay on 6x and from what I have read online these two scopes are my best choice. If anyone has either of these scopes let me know what you think about clarity and such and their pros and cons etc.

I spotlight foxes pigs and eastern grays when I have tags. I also stalk a bit on foot but only rarely

I've to this one - Nikon Prostaff 3-9x50 $325 - bloody brilliant scope and won't be the last one I own! Mines on my 204 Howa and I can pull head shots on foxes out around 300m using it off a bipod, plenty of rabbits around missing heads too (shot a few a while back at 250m with it (again off a bipod on the side of a hill) the optics are nice and clear/sharp - excellent value for money.

I've compared it to one of my mates Leupolds and a Swarovski and it was way better than the Swaro and was sharper than the Leupold too (which if I hadn't of seen it with my own eyes I'd say BS but it most definitely was) I've compared it to a few high end scopes now and all I can say is I'm glad I didn't spend a heap of $$ buying the more expensive stuff, I'm not the only one who has compared it to the more expensive stuff in the field and felt the same way, they are excellent value.

I'd heard similar about the Nikon prostaff I own a vx1 that is currently on my .223 it will be replacing my .22 scope now haha getting the prostaff. I have leupold medium rings currently, do you think they will be high enough?

Not sure if they will or won't fit mate, I normally take the rifle, rings etc to the gun shop and get it all mounted up there, that way I get what I want height wise.

Hey Wilso,

I've got a Nikon and I reckon there's nothing at all wrong with it.

It's the Monarch which is one up, but I've had a go with the Prostaff and honestly they're much the same.

Stick your eye to it of course before you buy, but for the $200 saving I reckon it's a goer.

As long as you've got a few mm clearance with the existing one it should? Same objective size right?

Unless you're literally scraping the action with the scope it's so close? Then you might just not make it?

I own and sell both and can't see a real difference in them as far as form or function. I am also not extremely picky about optics I just know if you spend decent money its worth it. The Leupold is made in USA and the Nikon Prostaff is made in the Philippines. I owned a Monarch and it was made in Japan and expected to see the Prostaff also made there. Was a little disappointed that it was made in the Philippines. I called Nikon and they said it was made in a Nikon facility by Nikon employees. I own a Burris MTAC and Leupold BX-2 binos that are made in the Philippines and appear to be of decent quality. I suspect they are made in Burris and Leupold facilities also. Both the Nikon and the Leopold have full lifetime warranties so you probably can't go wrong with either. I work in a union BF Goodrich tire factory so I will probably buy the Leupold or the Redfield Revolution in the future, due to both being made in the US.
