Importing a shotgun from O/S

Post by jastreb » 23 Jul 2014, 1:16 pm

HI everyone,

The very first gun I have ever shot was my grandfathers shotgun. I believe its a 16 gauge italian made shotgun. I remember it was a side by side, had engravings of ducks and hunting dogs on the side. I was about 7 years old when I first fired it. I only have very vague recollection of what it looks like but it has a huge sentimental value to me.

So after my grandfather passed away many years ago, it has just been tucked away somewhere in storage at our house over there which is not even occupied. Could be all rusted up for what I know.

But regardless, I would love to bring it in to Australia, and add it to my collection as it has a lot of memories attached to it and would like to pass it on to my kids one day.

Has anybody done something similar? Would it be expensive? Where do I even start? Would be great if some of you could point me in the right direction.

I think your best bet would be to contact the firearms branch. There will be a couple of forms to aquire ( cant remember the numbers off hand ) But I dont think it would be that difficult. You may have to get a firearms dealer to be the actual importer, on paper, not sure.

Ok thanks. I was hoping somebody had gone through the process and could give me some heads up on what to expect. I will see how I go.

You'll need to complete a B709A Customs import permit to get it into the country.

Apply and get approval first, then ship the shotgun and once it clears you go and pick it up. No big deal.

As it's already yours and you're not purchasing it there is no import tax etc. so you're just looking at the cost of shipping it.

Where are you shipping it from? Which country?

Once you get the permit approval from Aus customs it shouldn't be a problem at all.

The issues people are usually going on about when they're talking about importing stuff is due to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations in the US which is mostly around dealers, the sale of firearms, has a $ value limit etc.

They're not selling, your not buying, so you should just need your approval first and someone on the other end to ship it. However that's done legally from your source country.

Is it the US you're sending from?

Hi guys,

The firearm is currently in Macedonia. My father is going there next week for 3 months. I was going to try and use it as an opportunity to bring it here as I have no idea when I will go there myself.

No idea what I need to do from their end legality wise to bring it here. I would imagine, you can't just take it on the plane with you.(i mean as luggage). Which just puts a curious question in my head. How do you go shooting in another country with your own firearms.

Thanks for your help again guys. great forum.

"I would imagine, you can't just take it on the plane with you.(i mean as luggage). "

You might be surprised.

You can fly domestically and internationally with firearms. They have to be specially checked and contained appropriately (locked hard case etc.), you have to be able to shoot legally at the destination and all that of course but it can be done.

I have no idea what the Macedonia firearm laws are (not that that'll come as a surprised ) but if they'll let you fly out with it, Australia should let you fly in with it once you've jumped through the hoops at our end.

First, I think you need to get onto somewhere in Macedonia and find out how you go about getting the thing out of the country. Other than the paperwork it shouldn't be too much of a hassle getting it into ours.

Confirm the details exporting it from Macedonia, then get your B709 approved so you can make a move.

Yes, I had a look at that form and seems pretty straight forward. The hard part will be working out how to export the gun out of Macedonia. I will probably have to bribe somebody lol.

Thanks for your help guys.

Importing a firearm into NSW that is unregistered needs a B709 and a firearms dealer to pick it up from customs, you can bring it in customs will hold it until a firearm dealer picks it up.
