Bayonet law in Victoria?

Post by scrolllock » 16 Oct 2013, 12:35 pm

Sorry if this is the wrong section for this. Not a gun law enquiry but close enough I guess?

Like it says, I have an old WWII bayonet that's come down the family line.

It's kocher to keep one of these right?

I just have it as a collectable, not mounted on a rifle or anything obviously.

Cheers.

It's just a knife. You can have it.

Being a "collector" is valid reason enough isn't it?

Isn't there a scale for these things though?

Prohibited, then restricted, and so on...

I thought a few of these things you can have with some restrictions or conditions?

A bayonets not as regulated as a rifle, but more so than a kitchen knife?

Don't take it to the pub and you'll be right.

It's something along those lines here in VIC.

They addressed this at the Police stand at the Melbourne shot show a few months ago.

Short version is you needed a valid reason to have a bayonet.

Keeping it as a collectable is perfectly valid - no "collectors license" or such required.

If it's at home you're safe as houses.

If you're walking around the street with it they'll treat you like you were walking around with any other large knife in public. Not so good...
See you on the firing line.

You'll be arrested with a modest amount of force.

I actually asked a local copper about it after I got pulled over for a random test.

Confirmed it's all good :)

I asked a copper at the Melbourne shot show when it was on last year or whatever.

He confirmed the same thing. It's a collectable which is fine.

You're all good.
