Do you clean your snake?

Hi all, new user of bore snake cleaner here (for 12g Shotgun)
My question is... Are you supposed to clean the snake?
I've put 1200+ rounds through my new SG and the snake is starting to look a little dirty. Its probably nowhere near enough dirty to warrant a cleaning yet, but my question is... are you supposed to clean your snake and if yes, with what and how often?

i haven't cleaned mine yet, i was just going to throw it in the washing machine(in a pillow case)and see how that went, but im open to suggestions

I think Bore snakes are only good for removing oil out of your barrel before shooting it or as a quick clean. I use a 12g lever IAC and shoot 00SG and slugs out of it at pigs and your standard 7.5 clay loads. I did the experiment of cleaning with a bore snake and yes the bore looked clean and shiney but then did a proper clean with solvent and brass brush scrubbing and found the snake was only polishing the bore and it haddn't removed the lead or plastic down the bore and after you get it dirty all your doing is running the crap down your bore again with the snake. If I do use my bore snakes I use degreaser to clean them straight away and sometimes washing powder in the landry sink, I personally would put them in my washing machine as lead is poisonous and can damage to the nervous system and causes brain disorders. And I dont want to be wearing clothes that can cause that lol...

Bit of warm soapy water and hung out on the line to dry out, that was the advice from the firearm safety coarse instructor on the weekend and he was ex artillery.

No need to get get the bosses temper up by washing shooting gear in "the good pillowcases"
