Crushed stock by tightening action too much - little help?

So I'm a boob and I did something stupid...

I have an American walnut stock and I was re-seating the action of my rifle after cleaning it...

To cut to the chase, I obviously tightened the rear screw too much because as I was turning the wrench I heard a sharp *snap* and now the rear of the action behind the safety is about a mm lower than it should be to be flush with the stock...

What's a guy to do?

Bedding it would be ideal.

Will fix the problem for you and should improve your accuracy.

You could cut a shim or some sort of spacer to prop it back to the correct level.

I did the same thing a while back. A shim was no good, the back of the action was all over the place.

Bedding it like Monty said is the best answer.

If you are going to bed the stock make sure you pillar bed it as well, which will help so it dos e not happen again.
You might want to check under to floor plate area and bed that as well.
After all that is done make sure you use a torque wrench in inch pounds when tightening down again

Sorry for the late reply on this, been occupied elsewhere and not had the rifle out in a few weeks.

I've got everything to bed it included pillars, so going to give it a go next weekend

No worries.

Just take your time and make sure you drill out the pillar holes spot on.

If not sure take it to some one with a milling machine, dremel is OK for the rest.

Can't remember where I saw these, hardware mag or somewhere...

Anyway, I saw an ad for some crew that do guided holesaw sets. There had interchangeable drill and holesaw bits so you combine the drill to the guide hole and pick the hole saw for the side of the new hole you wanted.

You could ask at your local hardware store anyway.
