So I work in a building with a number of other businesses. During the usual "what did you do on the weekend" conversations hunting or shooting sometimes comes up and someone from outside my circle of normal colleagues who's wandering by at the time might chime in and ask a question or two out of curiosity.

This happened yesterday and I told the guy I hunt deer.

He said "Deer? In Victoria..." with obvious disbelief. I say yep.

"I've never seen a deer in Victoria..." he says, still will a dubious tone.

I ask which forests he's been in or where the properties are he visits and I'm met with a blank stare.

Yep... He's never been in any Victorian forest and never been to a rural property.

Where do people think deer live? Golf courses? In the shrubs by the side of the road?

reminds me of when i was young travelling around the world. when ever i came across the next beautiful euro girl i planned to try and lure into my den... i used to tell them i had 2 pet kangaroo's and a couple of koala's at home. they all fell for it..

Venison is $22 kg in my local Coles,nearly bought some yet thought stuff it hopefully i will find my own.

We had a fallow deer hanging around the family farm until about 1 week before I got my firearms license, then he bailed!
Was funny though, he was butting heads with Mum's stallion through the fence

No deer in Victoria huh? Wonder where my mate, who has never been out of Victoria mind you, shot those funny looking animals then, and proceeded to stuff em and hang em on his walls!

I'm country Vic born and bred, and I've never seen a deer in real life, in the bush. But I know they are out there. Some people really are stupid!

To be honest I have seen them on the side of the road but that doesn't count

Had a similar conversation with a friend whose boyfriend didn't believe she'd seen a deer as they were driving through the Otways. I told them there are probably 100K deer in VIC alone and they were completely blown away.

I remember my dad having a bumper sticker on his old HQ once.

"Bang Bambi for the Venison" it was either that or "Bang Bambi for the Meat", can't quite remember. I know it pissed a lot of people off, but he left it on the car anyway lol

Although I don't recall ever seeing deer when I've been horseriding, we were probably making too much of a racket to see them anyway. I do know of a guy who wrote his car off when he hit one, somewhere up near Dargo.

Believe it or not in the States we have deer living in many urban areas. I live near Fort Wayne Indiana and in that city of 300,000 there are tons of deer. The city is established as an urban deer zone and you cannot kill a buck until you check a doe. Because most of the hunting is so close to the populated areas it is archery only. I lived behind the local university in an apartment complex and regularly seen deer cutting through to the river bottom. Getting a spot to hunt is hard but the guys that have them can clean up if they are into killing does.

We have plently of deer coming in to towns around the outer metro, in fact, the roos are, over the last 3 or 4 years coming onto my property and about 50 to 100m from our home, and this had never happened until the recent drought.... no food so they move in.... and we are within the out metro suburbs of Melbourne, not bush....
