Taking a game carcass to local butcher

Forgot to ask when I did the shopping this morning

Anyone know if you can take the carcass of a hunted animal you've caught yourself to your local butcher to have them butcher it for you?

I suspect some OH&S stuff probably gets in the way.

Can anyone confirm?

I have asked one butcher this and was told they can only take animals from abattoirs.

I didn't press for details but in a nutshell due to health laws etc.

I've only asked one guy though at my local shopping centre.

Maybe there are different regs or permits or something for other butchers who'll do it for you?

Here in gippsland there are butchers who do house calls, they should be happy to do it.

I knew a butcher, and they were not allowed to have any carcasses that weren't from an abattoir or they would be shut down.

As Guliver mentioned, there are mobile butchers around that come and butcher cows etc for farmers.

I believe it is illegal to sell though.

Mobile butcher or ask someone here if they would like to help . I know a few blokes that used to work in Abby's . Not sure if they could / would help though. Prob best to ask your local butcher if he was interested to do on the side / out of work hours. Just a thought

I figure even with a cost of someone else doing it they probably do it a lot more efficiently and with less waste so worth giving a try at least.

It's not a bad skill to have yourself IMO.

Plenty of YouTube vids on it.

Check a few out and have a practice. Maybe buy a small side of goat or something from the butcher for a practice run

Before my father in law passed we used to have a killing day on his property for the whole family usually a few pigs and lambs we would strip the hair of the pigs and gut them, skin and clean the lambs, he had Chines band saw and after hanging he would do all the final butchering.
