Bore snake - How clean's "clean enough"

Post by chicachicka » 21 Oct 2013, 2:31 pm

Hi,

I'm preparing a bit of a camping kit and picking up a bore snake is on the list for if I manage to drop my rifle in the mud or something along those lines.

Not something I've used before so the question is... If I somehow managed to drop my rifle in some muddy water and really get some crap up the barrel, running a snake through it isn't going to make it crystal clean again.

At some point if you're running it through multiple times you must be spreading a little crap through the whole barrel while getting rid of the bulk at the muzzle.

If you just pass the snake through once though and there is still a coating of dirty water or whatever in there... is that clean enough to fire?

Would really like to not do something stupid on my first trip out :D

The Australian Army use them. Very handy. Your talking some prety extreme bad luck and very dirty barell, If the weight and lace can be passed through under its own weight then a single pull through will see your gun ready for action again. The snake can be cleaned later. The worst luck i'v had so far is jamming the muzzle into the dirt wich corked the barrell. Oh yeah, if you have any water or dirt in your barell its not safe to fire, expect damage.

Not sure if you've actually seen a bore snake yet, but it's not like a 6" pipe cleaner or anything you have to run back and forth to get some traction.

They're a few feet long so one pass through does quite a bit of cleaning.

I like them, I think they do a pretty good job.

I use one on the lever action, during black powder shoots and it does a great job, and one for the Martini.
Don't know how many brands out there, but mine have a brass coil half way along which does the job well.

Check you tube, you'll find a Yank, dropping a live snake down his barrel. :o

You'd just about have to go swimming in mud to get the amount of mud in the muzzle you're suggesting.

As long as you're not pile driving it into the mud a bore snake will do the job.

Bore snake? I think they used to be called a "pull through".

I think "pull-through" was from back in the days when everything didn't have to be clever. It just had to work.
