Powder Horn project

Post by Oldbloke » 13 Mar 2023, 7:30 pm

Soo, someone recently gave me a couple of bull horns. Been after a couple of cow horns for about 2 years. Anyway these two bull horns will do the job.
Here's a few progressive pics.

Coming along well.

I've ordered one to be made for my by a fella in the states. Going for a style from the 1750's during the 7 years war. My current horn has a lot of engravings and they're wearing off out in the field so I'm going to turn that into my wall hanger.

Nice one OB think I may be hitting you up for some more detailed tips on how you made it and what you used. I saw a segment on How its made the other day they were polishing cow horns for something they said they just used a special grind paste on a calico wheel, no more info on the paste of course,

Yep, beat me to it.

Here is an adjustable measure and a 30.06 shell that holds 60gr that I usually use.

I make mine out of antler or wood. A thoroughly dried piece of redgum makes a decent looking powder measure.

It's a CVA Percusion rifle. 1/2" ball. They are a cheap replica. But considering I only paid $250 I'm happy.

It's just a toy but will take it hunting if I get a chance.

Don't think of it as a toy. They're a pretty decent rifle for the price

I've seen some very nice bone measures, I actually quite like the lightly decorated/engraved ones shown in original pieces from the 18th century.

I'm going to call this project done. I intended to make a leather sling with a couple of brass rings. The leather that I had was too short and my stitching proved to be pretty shet. I intended to shop around for leather or some bright red narrow cotton belting. But today I spotted a length of synthetic belting in the corner of the man cave. It isn't leather but was otherwise made for the job and about 1/4 of the sewing required. So I've used that, at least for the short term.

Can you drill bone? Or do you need to file it?

I've not used bone, but I have antler which is the same basic structure and had no issues drilling.

Actually I think horn and antler is more hair cells than any bone material, When de horning a calf it is very important to make sure that the cap of hair /scalp is removed from the internal stump.
