Asked a question that I can't answer, please help guys

Post by jennageit » 09 Sep 2014, 8:19 am

Hi guys,

My hubby asked me last night what the difference is between:

A 222, a 223 etc and various others.

Is there some post that I can read that explains the different calibres etc?

Thanks guys,
Jenna

22LR, 223 Remington, 222 Remington, 22-250 etc, these cartridges all share the same width of projectile. But that's where the similarities end. The case itself varies markedly and generally speaking, the larger the case, the faster the projectile can be propelled. Each cartridge will have a wikipedia page devoted to it and that's usually where I start. The difference between 222 and 223 comes in the different case neck and shoulder dimensions.

Yes, 222 Rem. and 223 Rem. share the same calibre projectile, main difference is the case volume that gave the 223 the edge in velocity and performance, other diffs relate to case geometry....geometry giving the chambering advantages/disadvantages in other factors such as case life, bolt thrust, consistency in loading and accuracy potential... etc.

There are so many variants with the size (0.224inch) or very similar calibre bullet, generally the following would be classified as 22 calibre chamberings, rimmed, rimless, magnum, rimfire, handgun, liste as follows and sorted by gross case volume relative to 223Rem;

Example the Super Express vom Hofe which I mentioned elsewhere, is over twice the volume of the little( ;) ) 223Rem. Also note the old trusty 22LR has a gross volume of 15% the 223, and uses an ever so slightly larger 225 proj.
'R' indicates the rimmed version of the chambering.

Just post any other questions around here, you can google it but the info is not always 100%, even wiki :?
As there are over 415 'factory' rounds, a one stop shop as far as info.... might be a bit of an ask other than a listing.

The naming conventions for cartridges suck, for the most part they're completely useless in identifying anything about the cartridge.

If you didn't know any better it would be a reasonable assumption to thing the .222 and .223 are very similar, especially since they're both developed by Remington. However...

The .222 has 26.9gr case capacity.
The .223 has 31.4gr case capacity.

The .222 shoots 35-60gr bullets.
The .223 shoots 40-90gr bullets.

Other than the projectile diameter they're completely difference cartridges. And incidentally the projectile diameter for both is 0.224 and neither .222 or .223.

Some are imperial or metrically named - .30 calibre or 7.62mm.

Some are named for their calibre, others for their rifling, others for their brand, others for the year they were created, others for the place they were created, different names for different countries... blah blah blah.

If you want to know about a particular chambering there isn't a quick and easy formula to compare one to the other. You've got to read up fully on each one you're interested in.
