Morning all,

Anyone had any experience with this scope?

It’s for a Howa mini mini in 6.5 Grendel I have a PTA on.

Also considering a GPO 3-9x40, also with IR - it’s twice the price- but I know it will be good glass.

Short range dawn dusk spotlight goat, pig, wild dog rifle.

No experience with these scope, just know what you are buying. They are a budget scope, made in China. You should get a usable optic that does the job at a very low price. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

As a bow hunter I like the stalk and would rarely take a shot on a running pig.

My pig rifle's scope is a 1.5 to 5 and the reticle is heavy.

It just depends on your use and the country your hunting in as well as the game size.

This is my take on sights.

Open country, smaller targets 4-12×40

**General purpose I'd go 3-9×40.

**Scrubby shorter ranges go 2-7×32

Short ranges & really thick stuff, one of the below.
1-5×?
Reflex
Red dot
Peep or open sights

You would be pretty ordinary if you couldn't find your target using three power, practice with your 22 at the range and keep both eyes open, bring the retical to the target that you can see with your non dominant eye.

I used to have a 2-7 wide angle on my .243 and would on occasion find it was a hindrance for target acquisition on running pigs at close range in the thick stuff. I have a 1-6 now, and it is far superior in this regard.

So if you are only interested in stationary targets, then 3 or 4 power scopes, and their relevent field of view, will be no problem at all. They will also be low enough magnification to be able to be easily used offhand, unlike some higher power scopes. I find it difficult to shoot offhand with anything above 5 power.

Plenty of people will say they can use 6-18's etc in the same circumstances as me, but I am just an average shooter and there is no way I would want one.

Shot rimfire metallic silhoutte for years with a Vanguard Endeavor RS 4-12x40. Quite suitable for the little 22lr IMO. Clarity seems good for the price point, and the side focus is handy. A very adequate scope that has since won me two 3p rimfire 100m field comps under my current club, up against a slatherer of expensive builds.

FYI - just ordered a Hawke Vantage 3-9x40 with the 30/30 illuminated centre cross. Like it better than the dot as it covers less of the target and has a normal fine cross hair when not illuminated - which will be good for range days. Pick it up from Rebel in Brisbane tomorrow. Will give a report when I get to use it.

also a decent scope - heard good things about them, at their price point. Doubt you'll have any trouble. Do yourselft a favor and splash out on some mid-range rings with a centerfire. You'll use them for life.

Thanks for that, yep seem to get good reviews. Even Cyclops on YouTube likes ‘em. And he is a hard marker.

Afternoon all,

A field report on the new scope and rifle.

Firstly - I put a timber stock and floorplate on the Howa.

The Hawke is a gem of a scope for the price - compares favourably with my Leupold 2.5-8x36 even in low light conditions.

The duplex illuminated reticle has either green or red (I much prefer red) and has multiple brightness settings to cover bright to dark conditions. Easy to operate from the turret on the left of the scope.

The ‘eye box’ ( hope that’s its name) is very generous and moving from 3 to 9 does not mean a significant difference in face position (really like that).

Has been used spotlighting at night (chasing pigs at closer range - pity I was not shooting well that night) and goat hunting in the high country near Tenterfield. Three yummy goats in the freezer.

So good I also purchased a ‘Rimfire’ version for the 22.

Well worth a look I’d say if you are in the market for a quality lower priced scope.

for a "thick stuff" gun i would recommend either iron sights (not sure whether the budget howas come with these or not) , a red dot or a 1-5x24 or something like that. saying that, a 3-9x40 is a good all-round scope. i don't know anything about the scope you mentioned but i've found that these days pretty much everything is of somewhat acceptable quality and it's just up to what it is you want to buy. most of these more budget scopes are probably all made in the same factory anyway. i reckon that it'll work for you.
