Left over dirt from bore snake damaging rifling?

Post by beepbeep » 10 Sep 2014, 2:05 pm

G'day,

Question about bore snakes. If you've dropped your rifle in the much and run a snake through it it's not going to be as good as a proper clean on the bench.

If there are still a few grains of dirt through the barrel, would firing it damage the rifling?

There must be at least a few left over if you're just cleaning it out with a snake after an accident?

Any grit left in a barrel wont be helping.

If you are worried and out in the field without ability to patch it out properly, at least try to blow it out.

However, make sure its not loaded, and don't let uneducated people see you doing it. :D :) :D

If it was me and I had a creek near by I'd poke the muzzle in the water and clean it that way first, then put the Bore Snake or rod down it, or even a bottle of water over the muzzle then swirl it around a bit and see if that cleaned it out first.

Letting the water go down the length of the barrel? Or just an inch into the muzzle or however far?

And then drying with the snake instead of cleaning, is that right?

Just the muzzle end mate, stick it in the water and swish it around to dislodge any dirt etc, then dry the best you can with the snake, that's what I would do.

You don't want to fill your barrel with water.

A bunch of water in there could create enough resistance to cause a bulge in the barrel or worse if fired while wet.

Read my 2nd to last post here, and take heed from bigfellascott.

This is common sense stuff for the OPs predicament when out bush without full equipment.
In other words, be an Aussie and improvise.

Otherwise he would have to pull up traps, quit the hunting trip, and go home all because of a little bit of mud up the spout. :?: :?: :?:

the bore snake should clean the mud out,if for some reason there was some crap left in the barrel just shake the mud off the snake and do it again,,you would have to remove some of the mud to get the snake in ,ie unblock the plug of mud ;)

I think we're having a miscommunication here...

I said a bunch of water in the barrel blah blah blah... Not saying anyone should go home, just saying don't swap grit for drops of water and make sure you snake the water out too.
