New life for Old Pistol

I have been using a 1976 vintage Ruger Mk1 for IHMSA and wanted to give it a bit of an update without going overboard on gunsmith costs. The pistol is quite accurate and has a great trigger but the original adjustable open sights were good but challenging for ageing eyes out to 100 m.

I got put onto Ken at KG Customs by a forum member and he was able to sell me a "no gunsmith" Weig-a-tinny rail solution which provided the family with a nice Fathers day present for me.. 1/2 hour later and "Gunzilla" was born - complete with VX1 3*9 - 40 Leupold scope. Will get to try it by the end of the week.

I thought it would fee top heavy or unbalanced but it isn't too bad. If it improves my shooting, I have my eye on a pistol scope which is a little smaller than this one and with better eye relief. Should make it a little less "Gunzilla" than it does now

How's the rail attached exactly?

the rear sight is drifted out of the dovetail and a new dove tail piece is inserted. This is held in place with two "hold down" screws locktited in place. The rail is then placed on top and two allen key bolts then clamp the rail to the new dovetail. Attached photo is of the new dovetail in place. The underside of the rail has a cut out for the slide retaining pin on the ruger.

Hardly cricket old chap , I guess your just having fun with it, I don't know of any matches for such a set up.

Silhouette - unlimited any sights. Several guys at the club have ruger chargers with BIG scopes on them and red dot sights are common along with normal type scopes - I was at a disadvantage using the open sights..

Unfortunately I haven't shot groups with the pistol before changing sights but I did have a go at a 10" target at 100 m with the open sights, off hand standing and got four shots out of 5 in ~ 8-9 inch group. I will post a photo later when I can do a before and after.
