Japanese made scopes have good glass and are durable. I have had one on my Ruger 77 308 for 40 odd years. US made Nikon are good, Chinese made Nikon are OK, the Phillipines made Nikon have good glass but seem to be mechanically not as well made. What model you want will determine where it was made.

I bought a S/H rifle a few years ago which arrived with a Nikon 3-9X40 EFR (Philippines). I've had it on several 22's and now resides on a 243. Very happy with the overall quality of this scope for what they originally cost and as you would expect from an optics company like Nikon, glass is very clear.

Nikon have seen fit to abandon the rifle scope part of their business so I guess you just bin a faulty one these days!
