Paramedics are being called out to a stabbing attack every day in WA, fuelling fears the State is in the grip of a knife-crime crisis.
New figures obtained exclusively by The West Australian show ambulance crews attended to almost 400 stabbing cases last year — an average of more than one a day.
The new figures have been seized upon by the State Opposition who claim the “alarming” statistics show Perth is in the midst of a violent crime “explosion.”
It comes as homicide squad detectives grapple with a string of sudden deaths and alleged murders across WA.
The statistics given to The West by St John WA show paramedics attended to 399 cases listed as “trauma stabbing” in 2022.

The latest up to date figures show St John WA crews have attended to 321 stabbing cases so far this year.

The bulk of the stabbing cases since 2020 have involved men, with about half of those aged between 20-39.
Two-thirds of all the patients needed to be taken to hospital.
Opposition police spokesman Peter Collier said the stabbing figures were a sign that violent crime in Perth had “exploded.”
Mr Collier also used the figures to claim the Cook Government was being “deceptive” in their assessment that crime in the State was dropping.
“These figures on stabbings are alarming and they reflect the massive increase in crimes against the person over recent years,” Mr Collier said.

“The Labor government have been deceptive in their appraisal of crime throughout the State, claiming that there has been an overall decline.
“The reality is that violent crime and domestic violence has exploded over the past three years.”
It comes as The West recently revealed stab-proof vests and body-worn cameras would be rolled out to ambulance crews across WA to protect frontline workers from acts of violence and aggression.
A six-month trial of the vests and cameras started on September 27, with almost 200 ambulance workers volunteering to test the equipment in metropolitan and country locations.
St John WA chief emergency officer Brendon Brodie-Hall said this week the agency was committed to protecting its staff from “increasing incidents of violence and aggression.”

“Any incident involving weapons and or violence in the community is of course concerning and this concern extends to our front-line crews attending such cases,” Mr Brodie-Hall said.
In response to Mr Collier’s claims, Police Minister Paul Papalia said his government took a tough approach to make our community safer.

Official WA Police figures show that “crimes against the person” — which includes assaults, robberies and sexual offences — jumped considerably last financial year with 62,363 cases recorded across WA.
There were 54,764 cases in 2021-22 and just over 53,000 the financial year prior to that.
An analysis by The West of recent suspected homicides and serious assault cases show many of the alleged murders and serious assaults that have happened in Perth in recent weeks and months have been stabbing related.
