RIP Nick. Read many of his articles in the Outdoors mag and Sporting Shooter. He was still writing until very recently I believe.

Have to admit I dont know if I have ever read an article by this Gentleman, however, It is always sad to lose a member of the shooting community, especially one that has positively impacted a lot of others, May God rest his soul in Paradise.

RIP Nick, plenty of great reviews & stories you gave us, you will be missed.

He was shooter right up until the end too, he tried buying a rifle off me a bit over a year ago in a varmint chambering he had never owned, unfortunately the rifle was already sold.

I won't speak ill of the dead but I don't like him. Remember what he said about how he didn't see a need for civilians to have self loading rifles? Only a communist would think they can tell others what they need. I don't see a need for red pants so I don't buy them. I don't tell others to not buy them if they so wish.

Hahaha yes. Look whilst it may sound "ironic" on my part but his opinion effects other people so I will call him a communist. A classical liberal would say I don't like self loading rifles so I wont buy one. Where a communist will say I don't like self loading rifles so I don't want anyone to buy one.

so your against people voicing their opinion , cause it doesn't align with yours , but you don't like communists ;)

being able to voice one's opinion is the foundation of democracy . it's a natural right . if you don't agree that's your right . but to label people on their voiced opinions or beliefs is a slippery slope morally and ethically .

but you don't have to agree with me mate ......

I am not against people voicing their opinion. I love it. The best way to defeat a bad argument is with a good argument.

However what I am against are communists who threaten to arrest me and lock me up if I don't hand over my private property.

Surely you can see the difference where his opinion was used into actual physical action that molested hundreds of thousands of people in this country by stealing our private property?

My opinions are to let people do whatever they want and say whatever they want just don't harm others. Where communists want to tell other people how to live their life.

Thanks for the link. Good to see public recognition for uncle nick. Shooter’s and shooting don’t get much attention unless it’s some sort of tragedy

Had the experience of meeting him a long while back, at the pub in Hill End. Only spoke briefly but I kind of liked the guy.
Knew a fair bit about firearms. Mind you, things were a lot simpler in those days regarding firearm ownership.

Well,

Hard to believe, but the Sporting Shooter Magazine seem to think he's still alive!!
Looking at a review of a scope this morning(Review: Steiner Predator 4 4-16×50), and they mention it was posted by Nick Harvey, a month ago!
Uncle Nick's come back from the dead!

I keep promising my nieces that when I pop my clogs, I'll be certain to come posses their cat(s).
The day after the funeral, Puddin will leap out of it's bed, Yowl weirdly, and run full-tilt into the nearest wall...
Nieces will be able to say "Oh, GREAT....Uncles Back...We're gonna need a new cat..."
For some reason, I thought nieces would be more enthusiastic to keep in touch afterwards...

I met him at a Shot Show in Brisbane, I think it was the first one ever up here.
That was when the SSAA actually remembered Qld existed.
Thanked him for his technical work for the shooting industry. He certainly was a humble man and couldn't get around properly because of being mobbed by everybody wanting to do the same thing and ask him questions. Poor bugger.

Something contentious perhaps... Towards the end, he seemed totally sold-out to his earlier opinions and ideals, seemingly toeing the advertisement line where you bow down to wherever the money comes in and recommend any and everything that brings in the advertising dollar.
I reckon that was something he hated to do. That set the stage for now, where the site and magazine is just reviews for the advertisers, and the technical Q&A's are almost pointless, and done by a journalist who took on shooting for a job to pay the bills.
Goes to show what a true experienced expert and humble gent he was, and how there is a huge hole in shooting's interest now, where the "reviewers" just repeat the sales blurb of the advertising dollar.

I had written to Nick over the years and kept all his replies. I have them bound now in a book form as a keepsake of the man.
I recall once when he phoned me to ask some thing. well, what a buzz that was.
The country is a sadder place without him.

the best way to honour a man like uncle nick is to try to live up to the gentleman's standard he set . the older generation in general was more polite and courteous , with a greater sense of what's right and wrong. i spent a lot of time with my grandfather as a kid , which gave me the old world morales and standards i keep today . maybe i'm putting uncle nick on a pedestal , but we'd all be better men to try to live up to his example

Re: Nick Harvey

Post by Stoney » 03 Jan 2025, 5:19 pm

I wrote my first handwritten letter to Uncle Nick at 14 asking him if a 14-year-old boy could handle the recoil of a 30/06. My stepfather had bought me a heavily Sporterized Famage M98 in 30/06 with 180grn Musgrave round nose rounds on my advice for my birthday. I had obliviously read way too many big game hunting stories. ( He wasn't a firearms man ). No recoil pad. Steel buttstock. Open sights. The rifle beat the absolute s**t out of me to the point I developed a flinch. I probably weighed 40 kgs ringing wet, if that.. Anyhoo, Uncle Nick sent back a hand typed letter to my letterbox telling me that if I persevere, he was sure, I would become a great shooter and hunter. That letter was an absolute highlight to me being 14 and Nick Harvey wrote back to me. Good on ya Uncle Nick.
