"Police report that a man, identified as 46-year-old Martin Fowler, shot his 77-year-old aunt multiple times in front of his mother before turning the gun on himself in a suspected murder-suicide. The man's mother, an 88-year-old woman, is assisting police with their investigation.

Superintendent Williams confirmed that Fowler, a licensed firearms holder, used a registered handgun in the incident. A neighbor heard gunshots shortly after 5pm on Sunday, prompting police to declare a crime scene by 5:30pm."

Crap . That’s horrible. I just don’t understand what motivates someone to do that. I’m curious about how many times this situation has happened since. ‘96. I fear it will drive more “reform “ in gun laws. Looking at statistics that OB put up in the WA topic on this forum, mental health related suicide and self harm is a big problem. The fact this guy used a gun instead of a knife or hammer, it gets a lot of attention. Yet murders committed with firearms are very low in number. Another thing is a high road toll , which the states don’t want to release data on . From what I’ve seen and heard driving trucks, I reckon a lot of it has to do with recent “arrivals “ being given a license with little or no common sense or skill. Stories of certain ethnic groups driving B doubles recklessly abound. I’ve been told by a former driving instructor about transport companies trying to bribe him into giving the new arrivals licence’s . This situation is undoubtedly costing more lives than firearms related deaths, yet nothing is heard about it.

G'day,

From the recent data recently quoted in an Australian shooting magazine I believe knives are used in 38% of murders and firearms only 11%. Fists and boots account for 9%. Certainly, machetes seem to be the tool of choice for the young hoods plaguing the suburbs of Melbourne.

Regardless of the statistics the media will always highlight the use of a firearm given their cloistered and city-centric focus.

According to the Queensland family crime commission on average, 9 children under the age of 5 drown in Queensland each year. With another 4 between 5 and 17years old.

How many lawful firearm owners shoot people in a year? For sure way less than the number of child drownings. There a over 1 million registered weapons in Queensland with the vast majority would be firearms. There is nowhere near 1 million pools in Queensland( I think it is 400k). So statistically a pool is more dangerous than a firearm in Queensland. Ban pools now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you download the xls sheets and study them you will find d truckloads of hobbies/sports that cause far more deaths than firearms. I think even bee stings are more.

That is very interesting to know mate. Thanks I will have a look as I am bored.

I would love to see a media beat up about the rise of bee stings deaths however you and me both know our gun loving hobby is the one they love to hate on.
