Sierra .223 cases

Post by Lazarus » 25 Jul 2024, 10:06 am

A friend just gave me a big pile of once fired ADI brass, about which I am inappropriately excited, included were 5 silver coloured cases stamped "Sierra"
I put one in the case trimmer and took a shave off, they seem to be plated, nickle perhaps?
Why bother on a brass case?

They use boxer primers, unlike the steel ones that have berdans, so they should be fine to load?

All nickle-plated brass I've seen is brass underneath, don't think I've seen nickel-plated steel cases before. Plating is more common in pistol brass from what I've seen. No issue loading them as long as you don't anneal. Don't know who makes brass for Sierra.

Why bother? Because they're pretty. Perfectly fine for reloading.

I found this.

""Cartridges are loaded with brass casings, making reloading with conventional equipment easy and economical. *NOTE – This ammo uses mil-grade primers. Best for use in AR-15s. Primer pockets must be reamed or swaged in order to reload.""

Sounds feasible, so go for it. Load and try a few.

Haven’t seen Sierra brass before personally. Those primers with the blue glue looked crimped also. Kinda like the way Federal crimp there primers if memory serves me correctly.
