Gun licence reason

Post by Scott123 » 11 Aug 2024, 12:40 pm

Hi guys...just wondering if my son, who is looking to get his ab licencing, will need to join a club or can he still use the details of someone with over 40 acres for recreational hunting as a valid reason...

I cant see that option on the weapons licencing page anymore..

TIA Scott.

I _think_ you'll still need a club membership unless you are the property owner, lessee, or a manager for the property owner. Might be worth emailing Weapon Licencing for clarification. I would join your nearest club anyway.

G'day Scott123,
The current edition of the Qld Weapons Act 1990-071, listed as valid at 01-02-2024, states in S.13, Sub 3 (a) that if the genuine reason is Recreational Shooting you can provide a letter from a landowner same as always. Joining a hunting/shooting club can have benefits though, Cheers.

Ah Ok, so its still there No1Mk3...All I could find was the link posted by bladeracer...

But yeah I'll suggest he also join a club at least for the first year as he is rather inexperienced ...

The 2 guys I go hunting with both use property letters as their genuine reason, they have to get new letters each time they renew their licence. I have SSAA membership and in the SSAA hunting brach membership and also have my NSW R licence as my genuine reason. Just having SSAA gives you target shooting, the hunting branch gives you rec hunting, as does R licence. Both letter and club membership (SSAA or other) have their advantages and disadvantages (finding a property owner to write you
a letter vs ongoing cost)

In QLD you only need to provide one genuine reason sport or rec and the police give you both condition codes on your licence. These are sc2 and re1. So most people just pay the $40 a year membership to shooters union and this allows them to shoot at a range or on private land as paying $40 for club membership is easier than providing evidence that you have evidence to shoot on private land.

Also, this 40acre thing is nonsense. Show me the law that mentions it?

What it is is a guideline for the police. Anything over gets rubber stamped and anything under provide more information that it is safe to shoot on. Backstops, terrain etc etc.

Yeah alex..I'm not sure about the 40 acre thing either..However a mate's property was checked out by the local cop when applying for a licence and told it wasnt big enough and too open and to run up the road and get the rates details from a cattle cocky with a larger property....I also did read when I was trying to get a crossbow llicence for rec hunting I have 15 acres but needed 20 acres(whats needed for joining with a club seems a nightmare for this category)......

its a mind-fuk thats for sure..
