22LR shortages?

Post by mickb » 30 Aug 2024, 7:49 pm

Not fear mongering here, just reporting what the LGS told me. They are having problems again getting 22Lr in, apparently Noia for example has larger backorders than in recent history. Reasons cited as some chemical used in manufacture being used for something in the Ukraine war. I swear this war will eventually be used for any excuse to raise prices, we will enable a new breed of trillionaires while I cant even buy a sandwich because "flour is being used in cruise missiles" or something.

Anyway, ignoring my own thread hijack, anyone heard similar?

Russia will sell to anybody. Only the west has its self imposed sanctions that push the price up. Commodity traders are having a field day.

No shortage of 22 but gunco was clean ot of shotgun ammo when laast there.

I dropped into Clayton Firearms a couple weeks ago and I have more .22LR ammo than they had, I could only get half a case of what I was chasing, and expensive.

I have only found shortages of specific brands and models of 22LR The common stuff I have had no issues getting. But SK for instance there are more back orders than there are deliveries on the way. Its all sold before it hits the shops.

So far, my LGS has sufficient 22 ammo of what I like to use. Could well change, though.

Hi Guys/Gals

I met a guy at the range, he wanted to sell me some 22LR ammo he didn't want anymore, a mixed bag of different stuff. When he told me how much he had and how much the was asking, it worked out to just under $16 a box of 50 bullets  .
I can buy new stuff, and exactly what I want at my local gun shop for around the $9 or $10 a box of 50 bullets. This guy was serious, I told him at that price I wasn't interested.

It would depend on what ammo it was, some .22LR is $50 a box of 50rds.

So true...I shoot Lapua/SK pretty much exclusively and would gladly pay $16.00 per 50 for any decent lot number of the mid range stuff.

Same. SK rifle match is crazy good in my old1807 - it will consistently hold the 10 ring, if you can. Same can’t be said about many many alternatives.

I was at the local shop in Ballarat last week booking my daughter in for her junior permit and didn't notice any significant holes in their ammo wall. I think the biggest problem we have is the fact there are only a few importer/distributors in Australia and no manufacturing. I stocked up on Eley and CCI a while ago so won't need to buy ammo for many years. I dread the cost though when I do need to buy it

$80 for 500 is bloody cheap for these days. If I was still in the area I would buy at least 1k. Probably shoots like sh1t tho. :violin:

we might see more shortages of US stuff as panic buying kicks in, in the US ahead of their elections......

Its crazy a country on the far side of the world has no commercial manufacturing facilities of at least .22 and 12ga, and we can't (apparently) reliably produce powder (ADI..... or can we ... but we wont ? yes it's climate change ! too damp to make powder !...) ....it was a sad day when Winchester ceased production in Victoria .....

Yes, Cleavers have a special ATM on their website, it's for Powerpoints and for Silvertips, both shoot very nicely in our Ruger 77's and a 10/22.
And never had a misfire with them or a problem with accuracy, middle of rabbits head or thereabouts is fine.
The Powerpoints are the US made ones now that there are none of the Aussie made beauties left.

Interesting note on the Silvertips, they are sold as a sub-sonic self-defence round in the US, in short barreled pistols, but in a rifle they certainly have the supersonic crack.
I tried some 40gn Winchester subsonics and they are certainly shooting sub, but the Silvertips aren't, they are definitely supersonic in our rifles and accurate as, and totally spifflicate the Indian Minors that are moving into the farm house yard. No, I haven't chrony'd them.
They are a great price if anyone lives near that gunshop or buys in bulk for their farm or work and is going to Bris to pick stuff up.

I'm sure they aren't ever going to be as accurate as the target stuff that's $20+ a box, but that's going to be expected?

No new shortages that I have seen but will grab another spare brick of CCI std in case, before they jack up the price.

Hey, don't discount the Armscor 22LR 40gn hollowpoint ammo you can get in some places. I purchased a brick when in Bne ages ago and it was so good we got a case whilst it was on a Cleavers special.
The strange truncated bullet hits the bunnies with a big "whop" as good as anything else, and our rimfires like it as far as grouping goes, but as we all know rimfires can be bloomin fussy.

Isn't the bullet design with the big hollow point copied from the old Aussie made Power Points and Subsonics ?

Whilst on my way to my shootin' property a year or so ago I dropped into a local dealer in the nearby town and picked up 3 bricks of Oz Power Points in the old Orange Boxes, (some guy had brought all his stuff into the shop) .....it was Christmas for me !

I can't even find a shop selling Armsco to try.

The 22mag ammo went well and was over $100 a brick cheaper than the other brands.

Seen it advertised as on sale for about $285 somewhere but I don't support shops profiteering like that.

I heard the Aguilia ammo was shooting well for the Yanks and tried a pack but it's not that cheap unless you live near Brisbane and the shop doesn't even do a brick discount.

I have sort of given up on ammo testing as buying single packs will add up fast and that's not why we shoot 22s

I haven't seen Armscor anywhere down here so I've never been able to test it.
I picked up 10,000rds of Remington Cyclone today for lever-action practices every week. It's way better than it was eight years ago when I tried it.
