Knowledge or skills you wanted to improve on

Post by mickb » 15 Sep 2024, 8:33 pm

Some of us spend a lot of ime in shooting sports including reading and talking to others but Im still blown away but what i dont know. Some subjects I think I have a pretty good handle on but someone here will post some random facts up and I will go jeepers I better read up more on that. To be honest getting older I am not sure I am too motivated to take on new things . A couple of things I always wished I got more into.
1. Shotgun clays, have never been behind a thrower.
2. basic gunsmithing, always a pipe dream, Im not a tradie or even much of a handyman to be honest

I wish I'd pursued my childhood dream becoming a PH rather than getting stuck in a rut with vineyards. Now I'm way too old and unfit to even think about it. Besides that I would like to be a better shotgunner ( hell,I've made money out of shooting pest birds with one but I certainly don't think I'm very good at it ) and I'd like to be a better tracker. Also wish I'd gotten into primitive skills a lot earlier.

Learning how to sharpen knives. Since I made an effort in the last 5 years it has given a great skill when cutting up hundreds of sambar, foxes, ducks, rabbits vegetables. Always learning with new knives and steels.

Learning how to pick locks. Something I could spend more time on with the harder locks with security pins. The Masterlock is easy, Lockwood much harder.

Made an effort on shotguns a decade ago. Not perfect but I hit more than I miss hunting wise.

Building deer blinds. Wish I'd done it 20 years ago. I've built 10s of them now and in the right location I've shot hundreds of deer while keeping dry.

Realised that ambushing is way better than stalking 20 years too late.

And should have discovered shooting sticks 20 years earlier.

I'd like to improve my woodworking, being engineering tradesman gives me metal skills for fabrication, machining and design, plus years of motorbikes (British mostly, so fixing oil leaks and Lucas wiring!!) then a strong interest in steam engines and firearms. But I have never had a lot to do with wood so that's one I should like to study more now I've retired and once I get through the cancer surgery. Maybe find a Senior Citizens TAFE course or some such thing.

Sometimes I wish I was a plumber instead of a carpenter but I do lots of plumbing anyway so no big deal … I wish I could get a deer or fox with my bow but I just can’t. Pigs are so easy … I wish I was sensible with money.

I’m useless at driving semi trailers. Or earthmoving equipment. Can’t solve a rubix cube. Can’t work out the tv remote. Can’t play guitar like Gary Moore

Microsoft xl and all the finer details in Word.
I really hate using computers, it takes me forever to get things done.... then I get a update and can't find anything on the home screen, not even the off icon.

Excel is an amazing. Used it regularly for about 15 years. Certainly no expert tho.
Just unbelievable what I've seen done with it.

I believe that tool and die makers make very good gunsmiths, so I should have studied that when a boy. That way I could Really work on my guns instead of just bedding them.

Have been told there's actually no proper courses to take for gunsmithing in Australia, the closest things are machinist type course. Just what I've been told.

Oldbloke: "And should have discovered shooting sticks 20 years earlier."

I love stalking and shooting of my quad sticks. I'm beginning to think I shoot better off the sticks standing up than sitting and shooting off a low tripod rest.

That Irish rubix cube sounds amazing . Preferably all in black. So I can throw it away in the dark and never find it again , because it reminds me of the standard rubies cube that threatens to cause my brain to explode
