To scout scope or not not to scout scope.

Well I finally got to borrow a mates scout type scope, and got to try both the traditional and scout setups. During the day that scout scope was SO HANDY, ( the whole gun is handy, kinda like picking up a Winchester 30/30, just feels good in the hand ) Could make snap shots easy, and alignment piece of cake.

But honestly most of the shooting I do Is at dawn or dusk, and I hate to say it, but the scout scope setup doesnt lend itself to light transmission what so ever. End of the day I'm going traditional, maybe on an XS rail.

If you do hunt alot during the day as some do ( And Ive noticed if you have feral goats they will be usually up and about too, so you dont have to wake them to go hunting with you. ) Then seriously try the scout scope if it's available to you. If I was going to Africa, and had any chance of crossing dangerous critters, I'd scout scope it. :D

Just my 2c worth since I have this AWESOME Ruger Scout to play with now :D

All you need is some QD mounts... rip the scope off as the sun starts to set.
No scope for DG.....you dont want to lose the sight picture when an angry scratchy bitey gorey is running at you, and neither a 308, a 375R yes

Honestly mate I dare say the scout scope during the day is quicker than irons and I naturally found I was keeping both eyes open, I dont think you could lose the scratchy bitey gorey thingy in the scope. And It would just be my luck that I was setup for dik dik and had a 22 hornet in hand when something with big teeth turned up hahaha

Wouldn't work with a low-mag, large objective lens scope?

Or is it the eye relief that undoes it?

It's more your eye and the eye relief than the scopes fault.

When you've got you're right up on a scope and the scope contents is all you can see your eye sorts it out.

With the scout setup when you have so much in your peripheral and the scope gives a little less, it's not as easy to see through in low light compared to the above.

No fault of the scope? Just doesn't work great.

Great setup for day shooting though ;)

You could always do some 45degree offset iron sights on the rail as well if you want something for fast acquisition too.

Good call.

A regular setup with a fat objective for light gathering is going to be the most sensible bet if your a dawn/dusk hunter.

Yeah Mecca, mounted on the normal mounts. Not a forward scout setup.

I'm away at the moment and don't have my rifle handy to check... I have a 40mm objective scope though and think I'm using the 'medium' rings setup.

#4 on the front and #5 on the back? I think.

Double check that before you order any rings though :P
