Category 2 Collectors License in Victoria

I'm getting my category 2 Collectors License in Victoria next year. That will be 18 months after 11 pre 1947 hand guns were transferred to my Category 1 license.
Am I allowed to shoot a handgun legally that's registered on my category 2 license? I'm transferring a Colt Trooper revolver.
I'm sure there's some conditions where I am, but I don't know the details exactly.

In QLD you can only shoot guns on a collectors licence at accredited events that are approved by the police commissioner.

Victoria is exactly the same, firearms held on a collectors licence, either Cat 1 or Cat 2, may only be used at approved ranges under a Permit issued by the Police. The Permit can be a Club issued one that includes all Club members listed on the Permit, or an Individual Permit that has some added conditions applied. Some Collector Clubs do not have shoot days, mine has 6 per year, but if you want to shoot a handgun on the Collector Shoot day you must have passed a Handgun Safety Course to prove to the Secretary that you are safe to use such firearms.

You can shoot it but only at approved collector club events, you can't just take it to your local pistol club and shoot a match.

My club definitely has one, or maybe two per year at a state park. Sometimes they arrange a shoot at the local pistol club, but it's not a regularly scheduled event.
I was just wondering if there's any more exceptions, maybe when the pistol club has open days or something like that. Or in a state park.

Bloke in my collector society has an uzi with a drum mag. So bloody cool. But maybe once a year he can shoot it.

No, they must be scheduled events with a Police Commissioners Permit. Individual Permits are not really hard to get, you just have to satisfy LRD that you have a genuine Commemorative event, such as using a Beaumont-Adams to commemorate the Battle of Isandlwana during the Zulu War or a Webley MkIV to commemorate the Relief of Mafeking during the Boer War, just remember to tick all 3 boxes in Part 8 of your application, Commemorative, Historical & Thematic.

If your club organises a permitted shoot at another club that would likely be okay.
No, not at club open days or just because you feel like a shoot.
Most definitely not in state parks, forests or any other public or private land - we can _only_ use handguns at approved pistol ranges, nowhere else.

If you want to actually enjoy using handguns rather than merely collecting them get your CatH licence. Then you can shoot at any approved pistol club whenever they are open, but not with any handguns held on a collector's licence.

I am not aware of any collector society that has its own range? They just use other ranges to do the shoot at. The society applies for a shoot and the police commissioner approves or rejects the application and if approves sets the parameters.

Collectors licence is only good for buying cool stuff.

If you want to use that cool stuff all the time than the licence is a bit of a tease.

But having a 33 round glock mag when most pistol shooters only have 10 is cool.

Hi Billy, I am a member of the SSAA Arms & Militaria Collecting Club (AMCC Vic) and we shoot every month (typically the third Sunday of the month) at Eagle Park. I am able to shoot all my Cat 1 and 2 handguns there every month there as well as my Cat C items.

The SSAA Arms & Militaria Collecting Club looks really interesting. I think I'm still about 9 months away from being able to apply for my cat 2 licence. If you don't mind I'll message you for more information about it in the future
