SA shooter with VW Beetle

G'day,

A few years ago there was a brilliant shooter from SA who could shoot bunnies at very long distances in force 10 gales. He drove an orange/yellow VW Beetle. He posted a lot of videos which I enjoyed.

Has been on the site in recent times?

I was reminded of him when I went to the local Bunnings yesterday. As I drove in a Beetle drove out. It's been a few years since I saw a [live] Beetle. Hopefully Elmer will post again.

I had a look at his site and he's driving a Jimny now. I would love a Jimny just for thrashing around the district where I hunt. Apparently they go places other 4-wheel drive vehicles can't manage.

Iv driven Suzukis (Sierra and stackman) places you wouldn't dream of driving full sized Toyotas or Nissans, they will go anywhere they'll fit, climb brick walls and float over bog holes.
The only drama is the lack of space if your getting our for a few days or more and the ride is a little harsh.

I've had suzukis for years. LJ80 could go anywhere but was very uncomfortable and limited space for camping. Now I have a more refined zook. I have had my eye on the new Jimny XL but I'm not wasting coin on a 4WD as I walk most of the time when I hunt.

It's a shooting forum what was he looking for someone to tuck him in at night .
Now if he wanted more replys and wows he should have tried a forum with more traffic.
I honestly do not understand that mindset maybe Facebook would have been a better option

It takes a load of time and effort to create quality content, perhaps he's just enjoying shooting without the fuss of making great videos?

What sort of "return" was he expecting? I think everybody enjoyed his videos, I don't know what more you can expect than that.

on a forum there is no remuneration of any sort other than people saying well done enjoyed that video questions still stands what do you get out of posting videos on a forum

As anyone knows posting videos, if you want to build a following, it takes time and as Youtube data shows, most people don't have the patience for it.

It took me about six months of consistent posting of videos to get to 150 subs. Got to 400 by the end of the first year. Doubled that the second year to 800. By the end of my third year got to 2000 and should hit 3400 by the end of the year with 4 years in. I'm going to give it my all to hit 10000 by the end of 2025.

It takes time and consistent posting and as you do that you level up in skill and ability to make better videos. I'm about to get a super fancy DJI drone to level up my filming and videos.

I post videos but not really for public entertainment, more a record for myself and to share with those that know me. It started as a simple means of sharing my track videos with other riders without having to physically chase them up with DVD copies.

I just had a look and it seems I have 429 subscribers, my first public video was March 2008 of a 2007 race. I would suspect an awful lot of those subs would be scammers, spammers, and bots.

I don't understand Youtube's "algorithms" but sometimes it'll publish a video as a "short". I don't know how to make a "short" but I have 26 of them so far. At a guess I would think most of my vids have single-digit "views", and after a decade or more some are into hundreds of views. But for reasons unknown to me a handful have tens of thousands of views. I sort of worked out what happened with the most popular one, there was some glitch and I think somebody shared it on a boxing forum or something, I don't really recall now, but it got 80,000 views in a few days or weeks, until people worked out that it wasn't about boxing and it's barely been viewed since. I don't have any interest in turning it into a job. I generally try to set my phone up recording whenever I'm shooting, just in case I do something really cool (hasn't happened yet!), but only rarely do I bother uploading them to Youtube. If I have friends out here shooting I upload them as private vids and send them the links so they can pass them onto their friends if they want to. When I was doing my race and track videos I was editing them but I don't have any editing software now. If I really want to share something with somebody but don't want to put up the complete raw video I'll just take a screen recording, but that really degrades the quality. As I'm working on learning to run the lever-actions really fast, having recordings of what I'm doing is a very useful tool to see where I'm screwing up.

That's fine mate, I know you don't. What's the point trying to explain it to you.

I had a look at what this bloke posted over time, and he went to a lot of trouble. The videos and subsequent enjoyment people got out of it are the point.
It makes a community where people come to get entertainment, and maybe even add to it to make the place better. Replying to news threads or that we went to the post office or washed the car in inane posts are not. To me anyway.
Pretty easy to see the doers, as opposed to what the do-nots offer.

Who's asking for praise? Maybe that's what the do-nots automatically think.

That's surprising to me, he's an astonishingly good shooter, but there is always somebody that is only happy trying to tear other people down. I'm a crap shooter so any such negativity is probably justified and doesn't bother me

People will watch anything so do not be surprised for videos to randomly get views. The algorithm will start pushing out your video if people like it, watch it all the way through and so on. Youtube will push it out until interest dies down. Or a video may just continue to interest people so it will get consistently pushed and there are videos I have that get a consistent 20-500 views a day. Youtube can be remarkably consistent at times I find.
