Shooting glasses, but the price!

Post by Wes » 29 Aug 2024, 3:14 pm

Hi guys,

I managed to step on my shooting glasses at the range, so jumped online to shop for another pair and came across the "Falcon Pro" by an Australian group that look good. But...... $810?! What?!

What am I missing? What's wrong with a $15 pair of polycarbonate glasses from Bunnings

NOTHING.

I looked at this very closely a few years ago.

1. Shooting glasses never tell you what standard they are made to. (Impact resistance)
2. The US workplace safety glasses are made to a slightly lower std than the AU workplace glasses.
3. IIRC AU safety glasses are made to one of the highest standards on the planet.
4. All AU safety glasses are meant to be optically perfect. Reality is they are not. So, pay a bit extra.
5. How you clean all glasses is important to prevent micro scratches so, follow the correct procedure.
6. Regarding .2, a highly competent mechanical engineer did the calculations for me to come to that conclusion.
7. If you need prescription safety glasses ENSURE they are made to the safety glasses standard (must be polycarbonate) and get a certificate. Unfortunately many people in the opticians are just sales people with SFA knowledge on the subject.

I'm with OB.

A good pair of workwear glasses is as good as anything else on the market, and costs 10's of dollars. Not hundreds.

I'm sure there's a sales pitch to be had on fancy coatings and improving contrast and other technical bits and pieces, but at the end of the day is there $700+ worth of practical benefit to the "professional" stuff?

Not by any math I can come up with.

Just one thing here... most cheap polycarbonate safety glasses are made you know where, and this means certain limitations. I've bought 1000's of these in so many different brands for the fabrication workshops and sites I've run, and most have a design fault that is unseen unless you know about it.
Maximum protection dictates a mostly wrap-around design, and because of this the lens area on most curves around the face markedly. Not a optical problem (usually) when looking straight ahead at what we are looking at, as we humans tend to do. The lenses are (hopefully) optically correct in frontal view.
It's when you look through the side of the lens where they wrap-around, like you do when your face is on the comb of a stock getting a look through the scope, that you strike the big issue. It's then that the cheap lens is in a lot of cases often inconsistent, because of the curve in the lens being optically incorrect. This will bend the light coming into your eye, and result in a change of POA at best, and a warped bent image at worst.
It is definitely a condition, is often unnoticeable except on the target, and is there.
Now, there ARE $10 safety glasses out there that get this right, just check before you use them.

Sooo,,, (DURABLE: ANSI Z87+ certified for pivotal impact resistance)

What does that mean? ANSI is an American system, not AU.
IF it is same as their workplace std, sounds it, the AU glasses would have a slightly higher resistance to impact.

People typically don't understand the rating systems.
Hearing protection is a classic, their system provides a significantly lower level of hearing protection.

AND heaps of shooting related stuff is from the US.

They'll do me just fine. I bought 10 pairs, they were only $25.00 then so they have gone up in a couple of years.

AS/NZS 1337 is the equivalent Australian standard to the ANSI Z87. 1 US standard.

Not equivalent. They are both for eye protection.
e.g, glasses, goggles, visors, sun glasses.

BUT

The requirements are not the same.

The impact test that must be passed for AU and USA is NOT the same.
As I said earlier IIRC the difference is not great, but the AU requirements provide better impact protection.

Typically US shooting glasses are simply rebadged std safety glasses.

If you want to buy them, go ahead. I'm just saying ours are slightly better. (On paper at least)

The same applies to hearing protection.

You should let Wiley and the ADF know -

Q. What is the difference between ANSI Z87.1 and AS/NZS 1337.1?

AS/NZS 1337 is the equivalent Australian standard to the ANSI Z87.1 US standard.

Here's the answer in the link you provided.

"However, only a selection of Wiley X models have been certified to Australian Standard AS/NZS 1337.1 at this stage."

Both tests involve (among other things) being impacted by a small steel ball at speed.

However the speed and ball sizes are not the same.

The comparison we did was only mathematical.
We did not have the test equipment nor several sets of US glasses to test. That would be the ideal way of testing.

Anyway, they tell you some of theirs don't meet our std. That's tells you their std is lower in some way.

I don't have both standards in front of me. BTW, the AU std is about 50 pages.

Suggest you buy both stds and read them. Work it out yourself.

I couldn't give a care......my old man was a Commando in New Guinea in WWII, he and his other Commandoes didn't have any eye protection.
Wearing ANSI Z87.1 US standard safety glasses is excellent eye protection.

For anyone to say that says ANSI Z87.1 US standard is 'Nothing Special' .....just seems strange to me.

So what exactly is the difference that makes the American standard inferior to the Australian ?

So as to enlighten us uneducated people.

Got my shooting glasses made to my reading prescription to allow me to pick up the sights quickly on my handguns. They were made with toughened glass. I have used these for many years with comfort and success. The cost? around &150 (I think) about 15 years ago.

We would always get the blokes at the workshop who needed to wear glasses, prescription safety glasses, so they could have the best vision and comply with the legislation. I can't remember the AS off the top of my head. We also put in the light-darkening tint in them if they wanted it, so they could transition from in the workshop to outside without needing a separate outdoor set. There were plenty of frame designs to choose from, depending on their prescription.
They would've also made red-hot shooting glasses too, with their impact resistant lenses.
With all that, the cost there rivalled the price that our reception chick paid for her way overpriced Chinese made fashion sunnies.

I got a set of Kapvoe glasses off ebay and they are fantastic! 10/10 would recommend.. Think it cost me around $45 delievered? Including multiple lenses, and a hard case and cleaning cloth.

I use them at the range, and when i ride downhill mountain bike... Or when im on the tools... Or when im driving haha.

It came with clear lens for night time.
A yellow lens which makes a massssive when its low light/shady (literally night and day difference when in the shade)
It also came with various tinted lenses (Dark tint and a Silver smoked Tint) which are good all purpose lense for when its very bright out.

All lenses are polarised. All high impact resistance. Frame is Comfy. And wraps around the sides a bit to prevent anything coming in under the frame.
Hands down one of the best online purchases i have ever made haha.

Ebay Link here if anyone is interested:
