Correct me if I'm wrong,, but last time I checked, WA doesn't recognise interstate firearms licenses. So for a NSW, Qld, Vic, SA, NT, Tasmania or ACT Hunter who wants to go on a holiday and do a bit of hunting, he/she has to apply for a WA firearms license. What a ludicrous situation. Could you imagine the uproar and dissent if the same applied to driver licenses and or vehicle registration ? Well,,,,, they may as well do so,, because so much of WA policy making is simply ridiculous.

You can get a permit for upto 3 months I believe.
I just stay away.

Not quite.
WA does recognise interstate licences, so you are considered licenced while there. They don't recognise interstate registrations, so any firearms you take with you will require temporary permits, which cost about $60 a month, for a maximum three months, and the permit can only be renewed once, without exception. The permit _must_ include ammunition otherwise you will not be permitted to purchase or possess ammunition.

Now, while you are considered licenced, you can't borrow firearms in WA so you can still only shoot under supervision of the registered owner. To borrow a firearm you need to be co-licenced to it, which requires the same things as purchasing it yourself - property letters and such. I don't know whether they allow co-licencing to an interstate shooter though.

But there is no public land in WA for shooting, so to take hunting firearms you really need to have property letters in-hand before you cross the border.

Yeah, all of which I said was presuming one would be taking your own firearms and ammo. My daughter works for WA govt and has the top half of the Wait Awhile state as her jurisdiction. She told me that the "Elders" in the right area were willing to take me out to get a Buff when I was over there. That sounded great except the WA firearms regs made it such a head fu*k that i couldn't be bothered.

As with most laws that is the intent they hope for mate. Make it difficult so the lazy won't jump the hoops.

A little over thirty years ago I was given permissions to do some hunting on those huge Aboriginal properties so applied for a .223, Police simply told me there were plenty of rifles already there so just borrow something. Even then it wasn't legal to borrow firearms but that was the way it was done.

I don't know of any place that manages firearm ownership along the lines of the mess that is used in WA, perhaps some small European countries do it that way. They need to scrap the entire WA Firearms Act and Regs and simply import the Victorian ones, so much simpler. Qld laws would work very easily as neither have to allow for hunting public land.

Yep. Got an invite to shoot on a WA property not long back. Didn't go. Like OB said, I stayed away.

I know a pest controller who works in QLD and WA and the WA police would not let him use his semi auto 308 inside WA. So he had to shoot nearly 1000 rounds in a couple days with a bolt action 308 to finish the contract he had.

He reckons his wrist was swollen for a while afterwards. I have never shot that many rounds with a bolt action centrefire in such a short amount of time. Pistol or a semi auto or pump rifle no drama but a bolt action would suck.

Mate that would really suck. Pro shooting is not always fun. There is always time pressure to get the job done quickly.
