308 and 150 game kings

Post by bigrich » 29 Dec 2024, 6:49 am

hey fellas, as the title suggests i'm looking for experiences with the 150 game king at 308 velocities . my loads aen't max , 44.8-45gn of 2208 . reckon out of my 23.5" barrel velocity is somewhere in the vicinity of 2800fps, plus or minus 50fps . target species is pigs, goats ,deer . i've tried 150 pro hunters but found them to be lack lustre at times . extremely accurate , but expansion not as good as sst's . 150sst shoot just okay out of my rifle, just under a 1" , but sierras are extremely accurate in comparison. i'm concerned about bullet blow up with the game kings at 25-50 yard ranges in particular . sierras website suggests the 150 game king is designed for medium to long range performance on medium game . however i think their allowing for the increased velocity obtained in the 30-06 . don't start OB

so i'm reasoning at more modest 308 velocity they should perform well . can anyone relate any first hand experiences

Dead is dead lol

I do chuckle at times when people complain about bullet performance AFTER autopsy. At what point in killing that animal did the bullet fail ? Lol

my concern with the 150 game kings is bullet blow up at closer "pig" ranges . their known for being a "soft" projectile at times

Not used them but I don’t think surface blow ups close range will be occurring The only time I have seen surface blow ups was with 58 v max in 243 And at any range 50 mm v max in my 22250

Over the years shooting writers have conditioned us into believing, amongst other things, that the bullet should kill a game animal not only 'extra dead' but that the perfectly mushroomed projectile will be found lodging itself just under the skin on the opposite side of the animal.

Agree. It's an exaggerated necessity. If they break up a bit inside it just becomes shrapnel. Still doing damage.

i've had issues with hornady stuff at times too . close range on hoppers i've had bullet blow up with 55 vmax, one time down tenterfeild i had a nanny pop up 15 meters in front of me and popped it in the shoulder with a 140sst out of a hot loaded swede . damn near blew that goat into two pieces .

there's no such thing as the perfect bullet , just looking for personal experiences with the 150GK at 308 velocity . according to sierra data i'm up on max with 2208 . by design GK are designed to energy dump inside critters . big sow i nailed with 225gk out of 358win had no exit wound . inside of the chest everything was jelly . the energy dump actually made the entrance hole look like a massive exit wound cause of energy expansion . nathan foster writes about this regarding this particular bullet , and i've seen it first hand . not even a twitch out of this big sow.

keep those experiences coming fellas....

I used 150gr GK out of a 30/06 for years, burning out a barrel in the process. Roos, pigs, goats, emus. Given I kept using them, I think you can safely say I was happy in their performance.

even if they did blow up at close range, for the game you described, they are all soft so let them blow up and have a "bullet failure".......ill bet nothing walks away at that distance
Just hunt!
Be happy!
