That's hard to beat :-)

Sounds pretty good indeed..about the only thing that beats it is a couple of days fishing out on the GBR though its so hot just now that my reef boat is parked in the shed and only the smaller tinny is being used for a quick morning spin before the heat and afternoon northerlys pick up....

My sons girlfriend managed her first barra the other day that put on a good show with some acrobatics....an accidental bycatch of 75cm but we will have to wait till Feb to actually catch and keep them...

Had a request from a family friend for a coney or two, so I ducked out to the folks after tea last night. Ended up with 3 and missed another one or two from the same sit. I'd bought a tripod a while back and made up a cradle for it which works well, though I'll have to re-visit the cradle as it is a little sloppy and the rifle can roll axially along it's length too easily. The tripod is so much easier than the shooting sticks following a moving target like rabbits, should have done it ages ago. I've also made up a simple gillie poncho from netting, and with a couple of arm sleeves, neck sock pulled up and hat and a square of netting draped over the front of the tripod, I had a rabbit pop out at 8m away and sit there feeding unconcerned for a while before moving off.

Good reminder. I bought some brown lace curtain material couple of years ago to do just that.
Might do that later today.

I'm prepping and priming a pile of 9mm this morning but going to a pistol shoot shortly.

Yesterday Rose found a sugar glider dead in the garden with a joey clutching her. It was pretty feisty so I thought it had a decent chance of survival.

I rang Wildlife Victoria who said they'd make some calls and get somebody to contact me but after two hours we'd heard nothing. Rose put a wheat bag in a pot and we put the little thing in there to keep warm, then she went to Moe, parked and jumped on the train to Pakenham to join her brother bringing their mother up from Cowes to attend a funeral in Geelong. She had a Field Naturalists meeting in the evening in Moe so would get the train back and drive home from there. So I rang two vets in town. Both told me they just euthanise them but one was good enough to give me some tips on keeping it alive and suggested Nutrien Ag might have the formula. They didn't but they said it was in stock in Moe. So I dashed up there for a $55 can of powder (that would feed 5000 of these things). If we'd known an hour earlier I could've dropped Rose in Moe.

I made a little pouch and taped it inside the collar of my T-shirt so it could lay against my chest for the day. It would nap for about 30 minutes, then start crawling around so I would give it a few drops of milk from a syringe and it would have another nap. I was checking the cows and dropped in on a neighbour to let him know I was going to be busy this weekend and he and his wife rang some friends looking for a local rescuer that could take the glider, with no luck. But we rang Wildlife Vic again and spoke with the same guy from earlier. He asked me to email some pics and he'd spread it around hoping to get a response. So I did a quick video and sent him pics. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lHmYqXmPSYs

Then we swapped some emails saying they had somebody in Gembrook that could take it but needed to organise transport, Gembrook was further than I was willing to drive. At 1800 I got a call from a young woman in Yallourn North who wanted to meet up with me halfway but didn't have a vehicle but was trying to borrow one or get somebody to meet me. I gave it another little feed and finally handed the little creature over on the side of the road near Morwell at 1900. Hopefully it's doing fine now.

Rose's train got held up so she didn't get back to Moe until the meeting was ending, she didn't even get any cake, but offered to drop somebody back to Churchill and finally arrived home about 2300, starving.

We finished the AI on Friday so now we're watching the cows to see if any come back on and need a second helping.

To resize pics:
Just text them to yourself.
Once you receive the text, down load it.
Once you do this it will usually be under 500kb.

I tested some FMJ 9mm bullets in .38 Special in the rifles this morning.

I wanted to see if they would stabilise so I shot paper at 20m and got ten lovely round holes. I even recovered a couple of the bullets from the tree which I can use again, they were only doing maybe 300fps :-)
20250123_132744b.jpg
20250123_132744b.jpg (124.23 KiB) Viewed 1545 times

The two on the left were out of the shorter Uberti, the one on the right squibbed in the longer Rossi about 120mm from the muzzle. Wasn't unexpected as the load barely made 450fps with cast bullets in the Rossi and it needs more power to engrave the copper jacket. But it pushed out with no effort at all, being .002" under-size.

So I'll load a bigger batch with heavier charges and do a bigger test as it would be handy if I can use 9mm bullets in them. And I pushed 100 cast .358" bullets through a .356" sizing die so I can load some to see if they'll run through the HiPower, it would be nice to use the same bullets in my .38's and 9mm's.

I also loaded some backwards for wadcutters for the revolvers and they shoot nicely.

Had to do a bit of OT earlier in the week, so ducked off a little early today. The original plan was to meet up with unc for a cod fish, but he was still under his 4wd changing all the fluids and it was predicted coolish and windy so I grabbed the rifle and headed for the hills looking for goats. Ended up walking further than I originally planned, and found the goats only 300m from the car on the flats after I'd walked ~4km or so up and down the steep hills

I rolled two of the five (they were a bachelor only mob), the second (poll white) I shot with a 190gr Subx which failed to expand even after going through two sets of ribs at least. A little disappointing as I had to finish it off with a full size round.

It will make life easier if I can use the same bullet in my 9mm's, .38's and .357's.
So I loaded some .38's the other day with some 9mm FMJ's and tested them in the .38 and .357 rifles.
20250123_123049b.jpg
20250123_123049b.jpg (193.93 KiB) Viewed 1237 times

They shot fine and made ten nice circular holes in paper so they're not tumbling.

And I pushed some cast .358" bullets through the .356" sizing die and loaded some 9mm for testing (factory 123gn Fiocchi factory for comparison).
20250125_102906b.jpg
20250125_102906b.jpg (96.25 KiB) Viewed 1237 times

The .38 bullet is much fatter and shorter. I use a Chiappa 7" rifled shotgun adapter and found I had to seat the bullet very short to allow the round to chamber (the bullet was hitting the lands). I shot five factory Fiocchi 123gn LRN rounds through the adapter and saw 1140fps (They claim 1240fps). I figured 3gn of AS50N would get me close, and they chronoed 1040fps, 100fps down. Nicely subsonic but I wasn't sure they'd cycle the Hi-Power, so I increased it to 3.2gn. I manually cycled the magazine through the pistol cleanly and then shot today's match with factory ammo. Then I put eleven of these through the gun flawlessly, they even grouped nicely at 25m, about 90mm low but centred. So I'll do a couple hundred of the same and confirm they run with no issues before making a bigger batch.

Been a bit of a good w/e. The family were away yesterday so I took a punt and headed to the local trout creek for a bit of a bo-peep and see how it was faring in the warm and dry weather. Not great is the answer, moderately low (though still cool temp) with nothing of any size seen though there were a number of small (6"ish) browns missed, seen or landed. Got to watch a 4' brown of a different kind scatter a large spread of water skinks basking on a sheet rock when I spooked it upstream of me. Was about to head for home, but decided to have a quick scan of a bit of a rocky gorge and was glad I did. Watched something moving up and down the edge of the creek in the shadow and my initial thought was another snake, then a water rat but I finally saw a true rise and some fin, so I quickly mountain goated it down into the water and slowly waded up to it. I had to time my cast right as it was a very tight window (using the 2wt fly rod), both casting and getting the timing right with water flow and trout vision, but managed a perfect cast (on the second attempt  ) and a snout slowly sipped my Royal Wulff off the surface and I lifted into a fair lump of a fish that eventually turned into a 40cm Jack.

As the girls were still away, I grabbed the rifle in the early afternoon and went for an evening sit looking for fallow. There is some really thick stuff along the cooler side of the gully driving in, a veritable herd of herds could hide in here so I aimed to climb the other side in the more open country and hopefully pick anything exiting the cover and heading down to the farmland below. Ultimately I think I wasn't quite high enough to see sambar coming down, and there wasn't really enough open areas to see fallow here.

I must have pushed myself harder on friday and yesterday morning than I thought as I was beginning to feel it a little, so I packed up and headed back in the last light for an thirst quenching ale and found these two have an amorous time in the tree next to the old bush track. I say amorous, it was more like rape as she wasn't too interested, and he was!

Back in the car, I was rolling slowly down the hill along the dirt road through a large opening a few 100ms long and maybe 100m wide, when I saw a white patch in the creek bottom 50m below me. I quickly pulled up and through the black wattle in front of me, I could make out the form of a white fallow and with the aid of the binos I could see it was a velvet spike. Unfortunately he decided he didn't like Xtrails and trotted off up the hillside. Next time.....

This morning I punched some paper with the 97k, just checking my re-build on the tripod and some new 'pest control' pellets. Unfortunately they don't fly as good as the standard diablos, so will be limited to short (<25m) ranges, though may be the goods as they appear to open out somewhat more than the domes of the diablos. Was very happy to find I could get a 1/2" group at 50m with my preferred pellets - ok a 3 shot group but the 45m group was a true clover leaf. If you'd told me that I could to this with an only slightly altered stock springer 6 months ago, I'd have laughed. Not any more

On my way home I swung past a dam that has reddies and cod in it. I'd bought a handful of worms with the idea of catching a small reddie then sending it back out wearing a hook to see if I could tempt a cod to have a bit of early lunch. The first few reddies were tiny, but the 4th or 5th was a nice 8" model, so I quickly slipped the #10 hook in under the dorsal fin and threw it out.

IMG_5963.jpg
IMG_5963.jpg (426.91 KiB) Viewed 1114 times

I'd read somewhere of people catching small fish, then deliberately letting them swim around so the panicked vibes would draw in the big fish and the other person then tried to catch the bigger fish. This had happened to unc and I at this dam before, but not deliberately. First cast and the line jagged off to one side suddenly and there was a small bump as I tightened up and a large boil of water at the surface, followed by a brief flash of large white of a slab sided cod belly. Another cast into the vicinity and I slacklined the reddie so it could swim around freely. Again, the line jagged and I tightened into a heavy weight that peeled off line briefly before pulling free. The luckless reddie was still attached, so I sent it out for a 3rd mission. This time, I slowly drew the fish in towards me with a tight line and a solid thump turned into weight that pulled line. I was only using 6lb line, 10lb leader and a 1-3kg spinning rod not really expecting to see anything. There are a number of snags in this dam, so i was a little concerned with the big cod wrapping me up, but the lack of hooks hanging out meant that I didn't have to worry about losing the fish that way at least. The fight was not particularly protracted, though the cod did pull line often as I tired it out until I could see the large white form through the water. Holy Crap! Knowing I was into something pretty good, the pressure was on, but I was able to keep my nerve, and despite a few lunges and headshakes, I managed to put my glove on and grab the big cod.

85cm of codly goodness as measured against my rod later and my biggest fish to date.

Did some case trimming today, or rather did a lot of swearing, and a bit of fixing up, to finally get 20 trimmed. If you don't own a circa 1984 Lyman Universal case trimmer, then read no further. You probably don't need to know about ancient technology like this.
I had spent a lot of time yesterday, setting up the fine adjustment screw and assumed that it was all sorted. But I was proved wrong after about the second or third case that was measured. So the fine screw was adjusted. Wrong! After getting it wrong several times, I finally woke up to the retainer having been slipping all along. Its grub screw was leaving a cut in the main shaft but it was slipping anyway. Did a bit of head scratching over lunch, to think of using a hose pipe clamp around the mainshaft. Rummaged through an old motorcycle spares box and found four. Worked like a charm.................. for a few cases. More swearing :? :x
Turns out to be complicated. Trimming itself was leaving a burr inside the neck at the mouth. To retrieve the pilot from the case involved a hearty yank on the mainshaft. This yanking was moving the fine adjustment and the tube that it rides on, away from the hose pipe clamp. No amount of fine adjustment was making up for that.
After stuffing around returning things to where they belonged, the cases were removed after half a dozen turns of the crank handle, the burr inside the neck removed and trimming was recommenced. This had to be repeated 2 or 3 times but it worked well enough for the rest of the cases to be completed satisfactorily.

They reckon that case trimming is one of the least favourite of case prep operations. Now I know why
Anyone else own a Lyman?

It will be a bur inside the neck.
If I have a case that is very long they can be a tad stubborn. I use a Simplex.

It seems to be much reduced if you you trim more often.
