Came close to ordering a BHA in 500 S&W

and not out of the woods yet . :D yeah when you have that money burning a hole in your pocket and promising yourself that once in a lifetime expensive gun.

Its small fry compared to blokes with high grade drillings or 500 nitro doubles or long range setups with nightforce scopes, but a bighorn armoury at 3K USD + Import costs is a major deal for me. I even asked my nephew whether I needed a 50cal lever action. His reply, hell yes! Terrible enabler already at the age of 14, shocking. : :D

On a serious note I recall one of the fellas here tried one, owned one or handled one in cleavers maybe and wasnt too impressed? I couldnt find the post but if its you feel free to comment again. Something about rims jamming or something?

Mostly high velocity projectiles mate. You also get the lighter more frangible projectiles meant for the 50AE which runs at lesser power. I think the lightest is 275grain barnes XPB, then you have 300-350 xtp's in regular use, the woodleigh 400 grain flatpoint is about as big as Id be interested in. There are a few other heavyweights but not what I need. Nothing that expands for subsonic use but with a 50cal starting diametre probably a moot point,. :x

Yeah I've gone off the boil on this one now. Just a bit too expensive for what you get and the exchange rate isn't too super either. Might take a look at something cheaper like a Rossi in 454casull or 444, plenty of thump there

I;ve been watching out for a Casull too, seem like a lot of punch in a handy carbine, certainly would give the knuckles a flogging I reckon

Yeah billo you can order through rob bagnato in the US one of my mates reckons, who is an FFL exporter, arranges all the permits, takes the funds, buys the gun for you and sends it over. the casull Rossi 92 is about 1200aud but it costs you double by the time if lands. Pretty decent power though, the hornady factory 300xtp has 1650fps on the box for revolvers but chronies 2000fps from the Rossi. That's into 444 marlin power, 9 up the spout, under 7lb gun, very handy but I bet it hits the shoulder good lol! A hardcast or mono load at that level would topple buff I reckon.

Aren't those BHA levers gorgeous? Holy cr@p.

I seem to remember an article in an Australian Shooter from a few years ago where an Aussie reviewed these first-class rifles over in the States... and didn't the article finish saying Cleavers in Margate stocked or brought them in in a few different mega-sized pistol cartridges?

Yes cleavers was selling them a few years ago in 460sw which is the 454/45colt case even longer on steroids and 500sw. Price back then was 4k or so. Now thanks to the covid/Ukraine/martian tax they cost more like 6k to land. I think that one they list there is out of stock.

I talked to your friend Billo, good bloke. Yeah the Bighorn is not for me I dont think. Would be cheaper to get someone to rework a 45-70 guide gun to 50 alaskan. Im going full circle and thinking the CVA single shot route might be the go. My 44 mag does most of my mobs and pests shooting anyway. The CVA would be great as you say for range fun and impressing mates, also on occasional shot at something larger. Can you refresh me on the costs again? Im assuming there is cut and welding of barrels and complicated stuff involved there mate?
