QLD feral deer....

Post by bumpy1976 » 30 Mar 2025, 8:35 am

Spotted this little article on the laptop this morning. Find it very strange that in QLD, they are banning or refusing to issue PTA for large calibre but have a major feral outbreak with Pigs and Deer.

Me thinks that the powers that be in QLD may be looking at suitable calibers such as 243, 270, 308 etc for deer culling/hunting so that a 300WM etc are a bit of an "overkill" hence the difficulty in obtaining a permit for such an item. This was after a discussion with a good mate in QLD who is an avid deer hunter. A theory and opinion, mind you.

Not sure what the bloke in question, Mr Nielsen, is actually on about.
He has an accredited processing facility on his place (which is no mean feat to set up and not cheap, we know all about it), he's spoken to neighbours who "are at their wits end", and he already has a market for his cuts.
And where he is, despite the ABC fear mongering, deer are not an unending resource.

The red deer in that area are relentlessly pursued by hunters busting to get a go, so much so that trophy animals are very poor because despite what is said, most animals are shot WAY before their prime, and the so-called "Deer-Master-bators" have no idea how to judge cull animals unless they get to see them intimately close over a few seasons.
And the ones that ARE managed, are only taken via ballots that involve large money exchanges.
I watched a YouTube video the other day by a bloke who does just that, and all I could think was, FFS.

There is no doubt that individual farms are getting hit with mobs of deer. These farmers dont want hunters taking a few animals because of the liability, trust and cost issues, the ideal situation is to have a box shooter come out, take them all and share the income with them and it sounds like this Mr Neilsen could do that.
There would be SFA in it for the farmer from the deer value anyway, except his problems solved which is on ongoing saving and worth way more.

It could be quickly solved.

No such thing as over kill. 50bmg on rabbits is fun. Expensive but fun.

My eyes are not 20/20 any more so large calibre bullets with iron sights on small game insures a kill shot wherever the bullet lands.

It's a shame we can't post videos up. I also struggle with getting good results with pics. Oh well.

Interesting post. I came up through the Royal National Park south of Sydney a week or so back and came across a heap of the buggers.
Made for a bit of nervous driving.

Yes that's a very good idea. I've been out getting heaps of vids of some really interesting behaviour, I just have to work out how to put it all together. I mean, how to edit it, voice-overs and then post it somehow. I plan to have a look. I think they offer some options to do it there.
