New Rossi R95 30-30

I have a soft spot for the old lever gun and have just bought a 444 Marlin 150th anniversary model from Cleavers. This rifle is a great looking thing but I bought it just to look at as they were relatively cheap. I then thought I would like something to use in a more accessible chambering and something the kids could also use as my daughter loves using my Marlin 1894 in 357M. That is where the Rossi comes in. I recently bought a Rossi gallery pump 22lr for my son and it has turned out to be a great little rifle and is very accurate for what is a cheap and rough rifle. I looked at a Henry and Winchester in 30-30 and although nice rifles they were way more expensive than the R95 and I couldn't justify the price difference for a rifle that will not get a heap of use.
The R95 is a very close version of the Marlin 336 and is built very well considering it's price. Like all new guns I buy I completely stripped it down to thoroughly clean it and check it over. It had obviously been test fired at the factory as the barrel was filthy and one of the dirtiest I have encountered on a new gun but at least I know it was tested before leaving the factory. I was happy with the overall quality of the machining and finish of the components and it is very smooth to cycle. The trigger is a little heavy like most lever guns but breaks clean with no creep.
The R95 is a big improvement in previous Rossi rifles and a great choice for a working rifle that is half the price of the competition. I have fitted a Pentax 3-9X32 Lightseeker scope to it which is nice and co,pact and suits the rifle well. The scope came from a work mate and is old but was new in the box. They were made in America by Burris and area great choice for a lever gun. If they were imported in 45-70 I would buy another but at this stage it's only 30-30.

i've been curious about the R95 myself . they also have a M16 style extractor as well , which seems a more robust thing than a marlin style extractor . rossi also do a 444 version of the R95 . haven't seen any for sale in oz , but i've seen a few US forum reviews and the rossi USA website . i've had a couple of rossi 357 92's and found them to be great , accurate rifles. except for the nasty cheap timber on earlier ones . i think rossi have really lifted their game over the years , i'd buy a rossi before a remlin . i've had a couple of remington built marlins that were unreliable and poor accuracy . post some load/accuracy tests on your R95 please

Rossi levers are great, if you get a good one.
The conventional rifling just works, so accuracy is there regardless of what you shoot, cast or jackets.

Having owned a rOSSI, I truly understand the role that luck plays. Mine was a piece of Junk.

I do have one of these.

Not much to say other than it’s as described in reviews. Feels worn in out of the box. Trouble free motoring so far. Good value and fit for the task. Being stalking/hunting rifle scrub, brush. Inside 100.

What I don’t like is the rubber butt plate. Don’t really need it would have preferred a plastic one. Just for what it is, shoulder quickly and snap one of. The rubber is too grippy.

I bought a 336 butt plate but the hole pattern is wrong so not really sure how I’ll address it or if.

I did notice a wobbly feeling last time I took it out. And nobody likes a wobbly rifle. The top screw on the butt stock had loosened a little.

You can buy an after market screw for there that hand tightens, loosens. Because you can field strip it there and take the bolt out.

It’s a good gun for Aus. A good choice for our market. And for the price the finish is quite good.

I’ve shot about 2 boxes of Winchester super X.

And for factory ammo it’s quite spicy. Got some zing to it. Quite happy with it.

I was shooting of the back of the ute about 50 yards and grouping maybe inch and a half once I got used to it. Can’t complain.

Pretty much just watched some YouTube review. Bought the gun on it and the ammunition they were using. And yep just like they said.

Nearly twice the coins for a marlin or a Winchester are they worth the extra outlay. Yes probably. But do you need to when the Rossi does the job you need it to do. Not really.

I bought a 336 pic rail hole pattern matched. But the studs were a smidge long entering the receiver. Just sanded them down.

Wonder though is the marlin receiver thicker on top. I fitted low rings and a 1-6 variable and that comes up nicely. The cheek weld is low on these. Still cleared the hammer enough. I did buy one of those side hammer extension doohickeys but who knows where that went. Don’t buy one they’re dumb and they fall off.
The pen is mightier than the sword. If the pen is used to order more swords.
