Rossi R95 45/70

Post by Mattraff » 04 Aug 2025, 10:14 am

After buying a Rossi R95 in 30/30 I thought why not buy a 45/70 lever gun so I have been looking around at what is available and at the moment localy there is not much. I found a JM Marlin that I was told was not used and in great condition so went and had a look only to find the rear site elevator missing and the stock a little banged up so thought it was not worth the 2k asking price.
I then tought I'd email OSA who are the importers of Rossi and ask if there were plans on bringing the R95 to Australia in 45/70 and they certainly are coming. They are popular so delivery has been longer than they preferred but have been ordered and will be coming but no ETA as yet unfortunately. They will be bringing in the trapper and a laminated stainless version.
I will wait for them and buy one when they arrive as I'm very happy with the 30/30 I bought and at half the price of a Marlin they are great value.
I can't justify the cost of a Marlin for the limited use these rifles will see and from a manufacturing point of view I don't see they leave anything to be desired apart from the fact the stocks are beech wood and not walnut but that is not important for this rifle.

I tested a mates new Henry 45-70 recently and was quite a nice rifle to shoot, a bit lighter than a Marlin and recoil was way better than I expected. Would be my 1st choice If I was buying 1.

I like the Henry rifles and think the losd port and tube mag loading is a good idea but they are near on 1k dearer and certainly not that much better.

Tube mag loading is never a good idea :)

The Rossi trapper in 45 70 does look nice.

I don’t really need one though. Costs too much to feed it.

But I’m a happy customer with the R95 in 30 30

Seems that those who have posted replies, seem to like the Rossi stuff. I am thinking of a Rossi Puma in 357 might be right for me, for the type of scrub shooting I do occasionally.
