some people say the marks are UK proof marks at some stage after war ?

matching SN on bolt handle by electronic pen
timber stock got a different SN on other side

any ideas of this rifle's history?

British Birmingham proofs after 1954. Marking to the right hard to make out.
The 7.9 2.444" is how they called 8x57 back in the day.

They are nice rifles; A lot of them never really saw much service. There used to be an abundance of stock kits on the market going back a number of years for whatever reason which was good at the time because you could buy a nice stock to replace the shagged one that came with your $400 RC rifle.

The bnz/1 in a shield indicates your rifle was made at Steyrs Gusen plant at Maulthausen Concentration Camp, many of which failed initial inspection and needed re-working to be approved. British BNP 18 tons per square inch proof mark and 7.9 - 2.244" calibre mark as dnedative stated. AA 44 marking is possibly Brno re-work.

yes the rifling is really sharp the bolt looks like new the furniture fitting and bolt is tight no loose at all

bnz over 4 is a well known marking alternative to the 2 digit year 44, mostly on Gusen rifles for the SS contract either with or without the single rune mark.
