Sight options for Ruger Blackhawk

Post by Wapiti » 19 Aug 2025, 7:19 am

Hi Pistol shooters,
I'm after a new set of sights for a Ruger Blackhawk 44 mag. It's marked "new model" and it has the pinned front sight blade and adjustable rear for windage and elevation. 5 1/2" barrel, stainless steel.
Currently it has a peep rear sight (very fast but not very precise) and the standard front steel blade, but unfortunately the front blade has broken off through the pin hole. It flew out during recoil, lucky I found it as it sailed past my nose.
To keep it in use I've Devcon'ed it back in, but it won't stay there forever and because of where I use this gun the odds are I'll never find the thing again.

Can post photo if this helps.

Do any of you have any suggestions of brands that are available here, and the suppliers that could sell online?

The gun doesn't have any mounting points for a red dot or I probably would've tried it, although
the use of the guns here usually are at very quick notice and get carried around all day, and there's no time to turn switches on and off without issues.
My P229 has these tritium glowing dots, one up front and two at the rear with are incredibly fast and way more precise than the peep sight on this thing.
If it wasn't for the front sight breaking off at the pin hole I'd probably have never thought about changing it because of the type of use it gets.

I believe even the front sights were supplied on these guns with different heights up front to allow for different barrel lengths.
Is this true?
A set of green fibre optic open sights would be pretty good in all light conditions? Does anyone have any opinions of that, or a place where they may be available, if at all?

A gunsmith should be able to add a amounting plate relatively easily...

The reason i mentioned is I recently watched 2 different guys at the club switch to Red dot/green dot on their handgun in both IPSC and Service pistol club matchs and the difference it made to their shooting is quite astounding....and one of the guys, like myself, has aging eyes and his groups now at 50 yards blew me away with a green dot now on his CZ shadow compared to the month before using iron sights...He won both matches this month...I beat his score comfortably last month and this month he pipped me by 2 points....

I'm still want to put more time into learning to use open sights on my handgun after a lifetime spent using scopes or else I'd be mounting a green dot ASAP..

they would be wicked for hunting situations for quick target aquisition and moving targets and distance shots(if you could use them for that purpose of course... ;) )

On my Black mamba is a green fibre optic front sight and I have recently been doing loads of dryfire practice inside and out at all hours of the day and night...Even when light conditions are so low that you cant make out the back and front black sights the green dot is still visible so it is still quite shootable at dawn and dusk till true darkness descends...

Yeah, I'm sure it would make hitting what I aim at much easier.
It's just the size of the red dot sticking out, needing new bush holsters, switching it on and off in an instant which isn't ever practical for what I use a pistol for. And the big that finding a gunsmith out here is impossible.

The tiny Leupold Delta Point Pro that slots in where the rear sight dovetail is would be perfect, but they only make them for those cheap plastic pistols as of yet, I believe.

A fibre optic front sight, coupled with a green double-dot rear sight that retains the great click adjustment Ruger has managed to fit into these pistols would be awesome.
I knew Gold Coast Shooters Supplied used to carry Ruger sights, but they are no more.

You are overthinking it man..!

It was this model below which has multi reticles so you would have it set on a larger dot for those quick close range moving targets that you spook and have to get off a quick shot at while you can set a smaller dot for accuracy at distance..

https://reddots.com.au/product/holosun- ... i-reticle/

They claim 50K hours battery life so switch on and leave it and change to a higher brightness early morning and dusk...

I'll put one on my Mamba once I'm allowed to buy some other guns as well....I still want to be able to challenge myself with open sights even once I have the optics..

But with the dot there is no doubt they make a good shooter better.

Nothing in stock, "requires gunsmithing", "notify me" if/when we ever get stock, these pistols mustn't be very popular enough to stock parts for.
They are in the bush though.
But thanks for the suggestions fellas.

Fitting hiviz sights is about a 1/10 job - Gunsmith required is a bit of a pisstake.
Knock the pin out for the old front sight, put the new one in and either drill it in situ or mark it, remove it, drill it and put it in.
Its dead simple, even if you screw it up somehow, you can just go up a size for the pin.
Rear sight drops in.

Definitely got no problems drilling and fitting, The issue I have is I've searched everywhere for any sights in stock anywhere for what I thought, was a reasonably popular pistol. And the yanks won't send me any due to their international shipping restrictions if I'm not some dealer overseas.
If anyone knows of a shop here who definitively holds any stock for a busted-arse old Blackhawk, please let me know.
