I recently bought one of those Sulun Auslof repeating single barrel, based on the 100 year old Alof system, essentially turning a single barrel, single shot into a repeater using a side mounted tube magazine and a loading mechanism activated by opening and closing the break action.
I bought it new from Safari, but I think it was an old model, all black synthetic, for a small reduction in price. I think current models are around $725.
What I was actually after was a simple, single shot break action in a 20" with changeable chokes. Some of my rural property is inaccessible by vehicle and I wanted something light and handy for rabbit and fox through to large pigs, that I could carry for a day without it feeling weighty.
It was a bit more than you would normally pay for a 12g single barrel, but the loading mechanism intrigued me, if only as an interesting way to carry spare rounds.
My thoughts so far:
The Alof system is incredibly clunky, despite the promo videos and is very ammo fussy. It hates high brass, and it isn't a quick or straightforward fix if a round gets stuck. In part, it relies on the ejection of the spent shell hitting a lever hard enough to trigger a reload. This doesn't always happen, and if it doesn't, well let's just say I wouldn't want to be facing an angry porker if it doesn't. It's a "stop everything" kind of fix.
I am a left handed shooter and, my stupid fault, it didn't occur to me that the sharp metal loading mechanism would be right in front of my left hand. Painful loss of skin, lots of blood and the clunky loading led me to remove the mechanism and mag. Easily done with two hex heads and replacement with a couple of grub screws.
I now have a very light 2.6kg single barrel, with a very handy 20" barrel and removable chokes, I can carry all day. The mag is in the gun safe. Recoil is stout, but it's actually a reasonable stock design, so it tends to jump rather that slam into your shoulder. DO NOT USE 3" SHELLS, feels like a 458 Win !
The trigger is actually very good for a shotty, not sure of the weight, but it's crisp and easy.
It has a fixed blade at the front and a groove centered on the action. Lining these up like a rifle, it seems a dead on pattern at 20m, which is a bit close for my purpose, but I'm getting used to different aiming positions and getting quite reasonable patterns at 40 m when I get elevation correct.
What I do find perplexing is the use of full powered slugs at 20 m. Spot on shot pattern, while the slugs hit the ground or perhaps base of target. Go figure.
It folds to half its length, so back pack able. A great feature.
If anyone from Sulun is reading this, why not just bring out a non-Alof version. A nice, light, handy and powerful "do it all" - synthetic stock, 20" barrel, foldable or take down, multiple chokes, simple hi-viz sights, or even drilled for picatinny. If you could get it out with a price tag of between $500 and $600, I reckon it would be a real winner.
