Have you got Gas?

Post by MG5150 » 15 Sep 2025, 11:20 am

Hi All

Coming from a guitar world, there is a thing called GAS - Gear Aquisition Syndrome!

It's where you're constantly buying new equipment and always on the lookout for the next guitar, amp or effects pedal with or without the hope that the next bit of gear will make everything click and come together...

I know dozens of guitar players who have over 10 guitars, but never a pianist with more than two pianos or a saxophonist with more than two or three saxes...

Guitarists are just build different!

Now when it comes to Guns, the acronym transfers perfectly - Gun Aquisition Syndrome!

I got into hunting in order to save money of meat with the cost of living crisis...

Now I've saved a few thousand dollars by shooting a dozen deer in the last 18 months and not needing to buy meat, but I've also spent close to $10k on guns and hunting equipment in the same period of time...

And I am well aware that I've got all bases covered (a deer rifle, a fox/dingo/pig rifle, and a rabbit riffle) I can't help but start looking at the next gun for the collection!

Does this feeling ever go away?

Best treatment is to be hunting more.

Sitting around seems to cause the mind to create perceived needs that are definitely gonna make you more successful next time.

I think I need a howa mini, and a takedown 4570, and a 20inch push button 12ga and a new thermal scope.....but it is probably smarter to spend that cash on fuel to go hunting and spend the time walking instead of researching all those items.

But will that really help? What about after the hunt, camp is set up, dinner done, and you sit before the fire having lifted the lid on your favourite tipple. Sure you can replay the days hunt, think of where and how you're going to move tomorrow, but at some point that insidious thought may enter your noggin "but what if I did get the chance to go for a Cape Buff, a lot of those places insist on something in the 400 calibers and that bloke at the range didn't want much for that 458 Lott he was selling"

Good observation... you don't want for gear out in the field when your mind is occupied, but the mind does wander when you're sitting around idle.

I went out for a hunt last weekend with only a rifle and set of knives as my car had broken down earlier and left my hunting tub at my parents house. Managed to get two in 5 minutes less than 200m from the car and proved I don't need any more gear...]

Didn;t stop me looking up guns the next day haha

For sure MG5150 (and I only have 5 guitars).
I started off with thinking that I could use some rifles/guns for multipurpose but then realized that it wasn't gonna work. Eg you can't really setup a 7mm-08 as a target rifle and a hunting rifle, one should be light with a small scope, one should be heavy with a huge scope.

So I've been splitting things off for very specific applications now. Guess I think of it like I can use a shifter on a bolt and it will get the job done but it's rough vs using the correct sized spanner. That's how I justify the itch haha

Now my thermal scope and bino addiction, that's another story

Yeah, being as i have 2 guns ordered it isn't working too well. But they were so cheap.....

And I did dream I shot a buffalo last night.

Nothing wrong with GAS if you have the spare cash. Options are endless, add reloading and it gets deeper and deeper.

I've noticed more and more people having multiple thermals, and it;s crazy knowing most of them are in the $5000+ range

Do you have one which you swap between rifles or have a different thermal for each rifle to save swapping around?

(Embarrassingly)
Scopes I have:
Pard Ocelot 640 (Thermal.only) 512px
Pard TD62-70LRF (Multispectural) 512px
Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XL60 (Thermal only) 768px

Binos I have:
Pard HQ35L (Multispectural) 512px
Pulsar Merger LRF XT50 (Thermal only) 1024px

I mainly leave them on what they are on which sometime is stupid (a 768px.on a PCP air rifle haha) but if I need to use a 223 for example that doesn't have a thermal on it and I have a relo that needs me to sort some foxes out at their farm, I'll swap it over for a few weeks (multiple trips).

I avoid swapping if I can coz it's nice to have a day gun and a night gun but $$$

It's the quality that's the addiction, it just gets better and better I've used FLiR stuff at work for years like 240px and less. Now with the 1024px binos I can see the veins on a cow walking past or pick a duck up at 300m. Makes me feel better knowing what I'm looking at, and what's behind it. Hell I've spent many a night with no guns just seeing what going on, it's a whole different world at night

Obviously the further away you want the higher sensor pixel count

Eat more fibre

It’s a huge industry that’s always reinventing what you now need. The latest game changer.
But everyone needs a hobby. Can’t be all work no play. Everyone spends on something.
Could be fishing, golf, guitars. Or maybe recreational drugs hey Niteowl.

I just try to avoid going to the gun shop until I absolutely need to. Because when I get home I get the third degree. And I usually get in trouble.

And you always see these new calibres latest and greatest, fastest and flattest.

No they’re the same as something else really. What did Rossi bring out recently.. 454 casull. Because it’s the ultimate in personal protection.

Just no. Whatever. It’s a 45 colt or 44 magnum. Same difference. Just another big hole in something.

300 blackout. You need that. No no i don’t. I don’t need that,
The pen is mightier than the sword. If the pen is used to order more swords.
