22 ARC performance review.

I'm interested in using one for foxing...out to longer distances, i have LRF and Strelok to help with drop so I'm more interested in wind deflection.

I like the idea of this cartridge for presumed low recoil, better barrel life, less powder and use of high BC pills to beat wind.

Tips on a Rem 700 build and dies would be interesting too.

Currently use 204 with 40gn Vmax for most foxing...and just started a 243 with 75gn VMAX for those wary distant foxes....
Lower recoil, less powder, with more knock down power and wind deflection is alluring

Hey Foxshooter I've just had a 22 ARC reamer run in my Howa mini 223 but i havent had a chance to shoot it but it should be closer to a 22 Creedmoor in performance than a 223. :drinks:

I plan on running a 57gr Outer edge mono at 3500fps plus for everything from a foxes up to Red deer, the 62gr VT should be a good thing for bucking the wind

Thanks Billo
Will you need any modification to the bolt face?
What mag are you planning on using?
Keep me posted on how you go with this interesting project.

I have spare 6.5 Grendel mags from my other 6mm ARC & 338 ARC so no issues seating out the 68gr HP and 75 ELDM's, I had my bolt face widened and the with some top side reshaping of the extractor we got them to snap over the back of the rim with minimal pressure. I was prepared to buy Grendel extractors but a few gunsmiths said lets try to mod the 223 1 first

The quickest and easy path to a 22 ARC is to rechamber a Howa mini 223 Varmint or Sporter.

That's the sorta information I'm interested in. Albeit, theoretical ATM.
I'm becoming convinced 22 arc is the way to go for foxing. Re Wind and trajectory and probable emphatic terminal impact.
So far, I'm a R700 enthusiast, so I'm now wondering what it would take, if anything, to get 22 Arc from a BDL blind magazine..ie...would 223 or perhaps 243 blind magazine be fine...or would be up for all sorts of hassles.

Point taken about howa being an easy path....but .I've become fond of fancy R700 triggers...ie TriggerTech.

I figure an R700 bolt will be more difficult, because of the extractor situation resultant from increasing bolt face.

Thanks Billo

Donuts.
I assume the throat onna 22arc will be long enough to seat a bullet without contacting the donut area of the case neck. And also fit in a mag. Mostly thinking 62gn eldvt.

I do always seat bullets above the donut area to any issues and trust I could do the same with 22arc.
Please confirm!
Thanks

I've build several for customers. Mostly on Howa Grendels, but did open some 223 bolt faces to accommodate the Arc cases. Performance wise, it outperforms the 223, it does not get close enough to the 22Creedmoors performance to convince me to rather build a 22Arc than a 22Creedmoor. Nifty little cartridge that punches above its weight.

It needs to go in a mini action or at most, a short action, I've done one on a Tikka T3x and the action is just to long for the stubby little cartridge. I was able to ring steel out to 600m during barrel break in with this rifle, without breaking a sweat.

The 22Arc is as accurate as one would want it and I agree that it will make an awesome fox caliber.

TuskerOrd.
Thanks for your input.
I did read an article by a guy who's shot the 22 arc and he reckons it did come close. Not to be challenging or dismissive of your info, experience and input.
However, I still like the idea of efficient cartridge..punching above its weight...due to shoulder angle and girth..I guess.
I usually load mildly these days...milder loads tend to shoot better apparently..and create a bit more longevity...

I've just discovered that Hornady have created a 69gn eld vt.

I wonder what length this projectile is..if it will fit in a mag..
And donuts...if both will seat above the donut, while fitting in mag.

What fps did you get out of the 22 arc?

Thanks muchly

I'm pushing a 68gr HPBT at 3300fps from a 22 inch tube

57gr Outer edge mono does 3530fps but iive back it off to 3400fps so that it does shed too much on impact under 100m. Yet to blood

A 22Br has been suggested as an alternative...with the advantage of it having a regular 308 bolt face .
And brass to be made from 6mmbr brass

However this seems a wee bit obscure and will entail minor issues like...does Hornady make an adaptive case for OAL,..maybe limited dies...
But ..it does have a longer neck..which I like ...
