Reckon a different bolt handle makes you shoot any better?

Post by brouta » 03 Oct 2014, 10:48 am

I'm looking at some accessories and gunsmithing stuff, not picking on Tikka here but it's just the one I found - A replacement bolt handle for them is $130 - $150 bucks depending on which one you get.

$150 seems like a lot to ask for basically just having a slightly different grip on the bolt handle.

Can a different bolt handle make you shoot any better or faster or is it just bling for your rifle?

Looks good, gives you more leverage for an easier/ faster cycle but not worth $150.

Unless that includes fitments because grinding down a bolt handle to thread it sucks ass

If it's longer more leverage is one thing.

On the Tikkas though they don't have what I'd call a heavy lift.

Tikka is 90 degree bolt lift?

If you had a shorter lift I guess it'd be worth it.

Nah 75 degrees on the Tikka.

There are some with less though. The S&W I-Bolt is 60 degrees I think.

Never used one so I couldn't say how tough they are to lift though.

Normally shooting accessory cost here, no surprise.

Just replacing the plastic shroud on the back of a Tikka with a steel one is about $100 I think.

Not for me.

$250 for a new shroud and shiny bolt handle? Nah.

actually a longer bolt handle will slow down the bolt cycling but give you more leverage. tikka is not a rifle you need more leverage to cycle

money better spent on practicing IMHO unless you're one of those shooters who cares more about how their gun looks than shoots....you know the firearms equivalent of a guy who'd mount one on these on his honda civic

With a standard bolt knob the standard action is to pinch the knob between thumb and forefinger. With an oversize bolt knob you can palm the bolt knob a bit more which makes for a more economic cycling movement.

It's a weird concept to explain but I'd wager that I could cycle an action with an oversized bolt knob quicker than a standard bolt knob, all else being equal.

i know where you're coming from baldrick but i have experience with this. i have shot service rifle matches with both service rifles and modern scoped rifles. originally i had a bolt handle extension and a 32mm ball on the end when i set up my tikka varmint .223

the ball was great because you could just slam it closed on those double tap 8 second exposures, at times i fired 3 shots in 8 seconds to come back from a misfeed

however i now find i can operate the factory bolt just as fast with my the second joint of my index finger to open, no thumb and my thumb, no index finger to close. in my opinion a larger, longer bolt handle offers no advantage on a tikka T3 other than making it harder to put in a bag with the bolt in and making it look different. on a mauser action that required more bolt force i can see a benefit but the T3 bolt is so slick

$150 is expensive bling.

I don't think it will make any difference apart from lightening your wallet.

These things are usually just so you can say "ooow, titanium bolt handle!"

I'll give a little credit to replacing the bolt handle for something that suits your grip better but that's very subjective for the individual.

Not "better".

Not worth the money, but will assist in the slightest of margins for quick cycling follow up shots, if got the money and want slight improvement and possibly a better look go for it, I have a tendancy to bling me try hard TACTICOOOOL rifle. Water floats your boat!

I bought a couple as we have 2 Tikka 223 and 2 Tikka 6.5 swede's so as the eyesight is failing due to old age it's much easier than having to read the serial numbers on the bolts!!!!!!! Works for me, Tacticool bolt handles for the super VaRMINTS AND PLAIN FOR THE HUNTERS!!!

I do like the 'pineapple' handle look over the stock plastic knob I'll say.
