Google images suggests the weapon seized is an AKS-74U (or something very close to).

According to Google this rifle was introduced in 1979. I'm unsure if there was/is ever a way of legitimately bringing one of these into this country?
A quick Google search seems to indicate that 5.45 × 39 mm ammo would be difficult to come by in Oz as well.
Wonder if the authorities will let us know how that thing made it into the country?
Wonder how many anti-gun nuts will pursue same?
Wonder how many editors will pursue same?

Legitimate entry here 79. Maybe. Tasmania or Queensland. Was possible in theory. Communist origin post Vietnam Cold War. Unlikely.

More likely western Sydney crime syndicate brought it in more recently. They bring in a lot.

Impressive aren’t they. The receiver and even the buttstock just folded sheet metal. You can buy kits in some parts of US and make one up in a tool shop for fun.
So simple and rudimentary yet they never fail, mud, sand or snow.

It'll be 7.62x39 I bet. Media don't know whether something is an autoloader or an automatic rifle.
From what I've seen getting around, there are heaps of old pre-'96 metal sardine-can style cases stashed in country sheds and quarters, to feed the stuff out there.
No dramas feeding gelblasters like that. Almost looks real too.

The selector switch is that bigass thing above the trigger
Safe at top, full auto middle, semi auto lowest.
Opposite to ar15./m4

Not a gel blaster. Both drive buys were caught on camera. Apparently that house is used for target practise in western Sydney.

I just think 16 is a little young to give your kid an assault rifle.
Even if you do live in western Sydney.

Magazine looks like a new pmag too.
Maybe promag.

Also dug this out of a restricted file in 2020 relating to grey firearms.
More drive buys per capita in Sydney than Los Angeles.
There's what were told.
And what were not told.

The official narrative. Howards gun laws saved us from becoming like America.

And the selector looks like it's a semi-auto, I only see the two detents "S" and "F".

There is no civilian version of that rifle.

Regardless, the originals had a three position selector, safe, semi and auto, unless my eyes have stopped working, that pic you posted shows safe and semi.

And I have seen copies of Osama's rifle in the US in semi-auto only in both 7.62 and 5.56 iterations. Unless the YouTube videos online are all AI BS.
Drugs come flooding into Australia, along with firearms. A fact the media like to blame us for.

That’s true. The original dose t have an s or an f stamped. Which is interesting as to its origin being from the US. Like its mag.

First off, it looks to be 7.62x39. 5.45 has a different taper and straighter magazine.

Second, the dimple it has above the magazine well and the finish looks exactly like a North Korean AK.

North Korean AKs were and are widely distributed in the Middle East, especially Syria and Lebanon, so it probably was imported from there by gangs or terrorist groups.
