Draft letter to copy and paste to your politicians

Post by Wapiti » 20 Dec 2025, 10:24 am

Here's a letter for those of you unsure what to write.
I've flogged it from a NSW Magnum Sports email in my inbox.

I invite other members to post up similar, simpler of other good email examples to make it easier for others.
Fussy has elsewhere posted up excellent sources to look up and send them to.

DO IT TODAY

The letter example (sorry for the edits prior to posting):

Subject: Concerns Regarding Proposed NSW Firearm Reforms

Dear [Title and Name],

I am a licensed, law-abiding firearm owner writing to express serious concern about the proposed NSW firearm reform legislation.

We will not accept any further restrictions of firearms or licensing for law-abiding Australian voters.

I do not support reforms that target compliant licence holders by failed politicians using firearms laws as a political smokescreen while failing to address the real drivers of violence and extremism.

We will also NEVER AGAIN support any politician or political party in the future that does this to real Australians.

In particular:

1. Diversion From the Real Problem
Gun reform does nothing to address the national surge in antisemitism, radicalisation and extremist ideology. Lawful firearm owners must not be used as scapegoats to avoid confronting these deeper and more complex issues.

2. Capacity Limits
Proposed firearm capacity limits fundamentally misunderstand both firearm use and public safety.

Capacity limits do not stop terrorism or extremist violence. Terrorists should have no access to firearms at all. Limiting capacity assumes lawful access and lawful intent, neither of which applies to terrorists or criminals. Someone willing to commit mass violence is not deterred by arbitrary restrictions on magazine size or capacity.

Firearms in Australia are already approved based on a genuine reason framework. Different legitimate purposes require different tools. Just as no one would suggest limiting a golfer to one club regardless of distance or terrain, capacity limits ignore the reality that different shooting activities, occupational requirements and safety considerations demand different equipment.

Using the appropriate tool for the intended purpose improves safety. In some contexts, higher capacity reduces the need for repeated reloading, lowers the risk of mishandling under stress, and supports humane outcomes in pest control and animal welfare. Arbitrary limits do not improve safety and may create unintended risks.

Capacity limits also punish lawful firearm owners for the actions of deranged, radicalised terrorists who operate entirely outside the licensing system. Law-abiding shooters comply with strict storage, licensing and renewal requirements and are not the source of extremist violence.

If the objective is public safety, the focus must be on preventing terrorists and criminals from accessing firearms at all, not on restricting the lawful tools of compliant citizens.

3. Compensation and Buy-Back Costs
Any reform that renders lawfully owned firearms unlawful will require fair and lawful compensation. This obligation does not stop at the firearm itself.

A mandatory buy-back would also require compensation for:

● Firearms

● Magazines and other regulated ancillaries

● Optics and sighting systems

● Ammunition rendered unusable or unlawful

● Dealer stock held in good faith under existing law

Beyond compensation to owners and businesses, there are significant administrative and enforcement costs. These include valuation, processing, storage, transport, destruction, compliance oversight and additional policing resources required to implement the scheme.

Past buy-back programs demonstrate that these costs escalate rapidly and run into the billions of dollars once fully accounted for. At a time of significant cost-of-living pressure and strained public finances, it is reasonable to ask who will pay for this.

Will taxpayers fund another multi-billion-dollar program that targets compliant citizens, or will lawful firearm owners and small businesses be expected to absorb the losses?

If existing laws were not properly enforced, shifting the financial burden onto law-abiding Australians is neither fair nor responsible. Public money should be directed toward addressing extremism, radicalisation and community safety, not compensating for rushed and avoidable legislative overreach.

Australia already has some of the toughest firearm laws in the world. If existing systems failed, they should be properly reviewed and fixed. Rushed legislation will not deliver safer outcomes.

I urge you to oppose reforms that punish lawful citizens and instead focus on evidence-based solutions that genuinely improve public safety.

Yours sincerely,

I did a detailed letter to a few.
The rest (total count 22) received a brief note, saying I was against it and expect them to vote accordingly, and I will do so at the next election (reminded them what happened to the Nationals when they failed to stand up for us in 1996).

You will notice in the potential idea for an email to send has a few sentences in bold right up the top.

It is VERY important that the beginning of the letter/email has the intention/point to get across clear and at the start.
I learnt this early on in my career looking after businesses with 100's of employees, and dealing with all sorts of self-interested, distracted officialdom.

Politicians have their paid admin sorting out the for/against, message/confused message/throw in the bin pointless message catagories...
It is very important that the threats to their gravy train and the feelings of the voting public are immediately understood clearly and quickly before they lose interest.
You can write all the babble why they are wrong after that, go ahead, because usually they will not read it anyway.

They are only concerned about threats to their lifelong do-nothing existence.
DO IT !!!

It's refreshing to see that city folk know who are to blame for Bondi.

A copper mate of mine told me they are seeing this all around Brisbane, there are some strong-minded Aussie patriots here. To see this is refreshing.
She sent me these pics from this morning.

I'm draft about 12 letters today and post at 9am tomorrow morning. So I need to keep the message simple.

I had to think carefully about the order of the message and the target audience.

Dear Sir/Madam,

1. I will vote against any party that changes the current firearms laws in Victoria in the next election.
2. I will vote for any party that doesn't change the current firearm laws in Victoria in the next election.

kind regards

Its taken over 3 hours and some of the letters I had to add extra context but now every one of the 128 MPs in Victoria has got my message. Some don't have automatic replies on but I've got read receipt on every one of them.

If you want an outcome you have to put in the effort.

Over to you guys in NSW, QLD, NT, SA and Tas.

That draft letter is to long. These letters are read by staff not by the MP and should be short, sharp and concise.

I told my state MP that I am a single issue voter and tyranny is that issue.

My state MP is liberal so in my eyes he is a communist. He hates me. He keeps telling me he is not a commie but I tell him his actions speak otherwise.

Liberal national party are neither liberal nor national.

You hear the words liberal national and you think yesss freedom and nationalism. But it is a ruse.

Correct. Opinions made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. They already have an angle. Your angle is to vote them out.

Ordered a few stickers for my car too. “Be your own first responder” and “gun rights are human rights”.

Here is my letter to my state and federal members, if anyone is looking for ideas for a letter

Dear Dan,
In the aftermath of the terrorist attack on Bondi which has left Australia and myself traumatised, Albanese has announced he will make changes to the gun laws.

As a constituent of Kavel I would ask that you follow an evidenced based approach to gun laws and public safety and consider the following points.

1. Australia has some of the strictest gun laws in the world. From my own experience it took 307 days from the time I applied for my license to the time that I took owership of my first rifle. Getting a Firearms License in this country is not a trivial matter. It takes alot of committed study to pass the Firearms theory and practical courses.

2. The Australian Institute of Criminology has shown that 96% of gun related crime in Australia is caused by unregistered firearms and / or unlicensed users. This shows that firearm related problems are caused by criminals and terrorists not law abiding firearms owners. Changing the already adequate laws will have no effect on these terrorist attacks.

3. All states have Association Rules as part of their Firearms Laws. If I or any member of my immediate family associate with drug traffickers, convicted criminals or terrorists the Police can seize my firearms. If I make comments online that threaten the safety of other people the Police can seize my firearms.

4. As a licensed firearms owner I am a second class citizen in this country. The Police can search my home, property or vehicles without the need for a search warrant. I accept this as a part of owning firearms with the need for the Police to be able to maintain community safefy. What I do not accept is being made into a political scapegoat for the failure of this Government and it's Departments at so many levels.

5. Australia is facing an irreversable environmental problem caused by introduced feral species. These feral species are permanently destroying native habitat and causing the extinction of groups of native Australian animals. Part of the management of this problem is ground shooting by trained and accredited volunteers. I am a part of the SSAA Conservation and Wildlife Management group and undertake culls that are organised and approved by Dept. Environment & Water. These efforts are already hampered by Australia's existing firearms laws as we cannot use suppressors to moderate the sound of the firearms and are not able to use semi-automatic firearms to quickly shoot large groups of feral animals before they escape. Increased firearms laws will further hamper these efforts.

6. Many of your consistuents are primary producers. They need to be able to control introduced ferals and over abundant species on their properties, or have volunteers such as myself do this on their behalf. I do feral pest management on four local properties. Increased firearms laws will further hamper these efforts. As examples I need to be able to own a number of different rifles with different setups for day and night shooting and different calibres for different species depending on the size of the target animal.

In summary the Australian Gun laws do not need to be changed. All of the required laws and rules are already in place. This tragedy was caused by the failure of this Government and it's Departments at so many levels. ASIO had one of the Bondi Terrorists on a watch list, all of the neccessary laws are already in place for the Police to confiscate their firearms without a search warrant. To address this problem Australia needs tougher counter terrorism laws targeted at extremists who are intent on causing harm to other Australian Citizens, not targeting law abiding citizens who own firearms just because they are an easy political target.

Albanese makes inflammatory comments such as "there is too many guns on the streets". There no guns on the streets, they are locked up at home in purpose built gun safes and guarded by responsible law abiding citizens. It takes a terrorist to turn a firearm into a weapon.

Happy to discuss any of the above points with you.

Some people call me heartless but I live my life on reason and logic not emotion. F feelings! Only a commie loser uses emotion as a viewpoint. I am telling everyone at work that mass shootings are statistical anomalies.

Over a million guns in Queensland yet where are the million murders? If the legally owned guns were the problem why are there not a million murders?

Even if 1% of the million guns were the problem where are the 10 thousand murders? Or the 5 thousand murders for 0.5%.

The fact is mass shootings are a mathematically rarity. 10 people die by getting hit by lightning every year.

Hey Team,

I sent an email to everybody. Below is the list of all the NSW Members of the Parliament that can be reached via emails. Pasting it here as it is very easy to send one email to all of them at once. If we all do that, the number of emails will be massive. (Just paste the list below in a BCC distribution list when you send the email. I used a generic introduction that is valid for all of them: Dearm Member of the Parliament Office. Template to use is above and everywhere.)

Please give it a go,
Thanks,

Members of NSW Parliament

Exactly why I wrote, summarise your thoughts at the very beginning. Even in bold.

As I said, if you want to babble on afterwards, as all the draft emails every business is sending out as examples, most politicians will not read past the first paragraphs.
They are only looking for threats to their gravy train, and won't waste time looking for your hidden intentions, and they already know all the facts.
