The most devasting 22LR round on rabbits

Post by mchughcb » 31 Dec 2025, 8:47 pm

They are now sold out of Australia and I'm told no more shipments so its either quiet or mini mags, however if anybody knows where there is a stash or they want sell me their's then PM me.

I was using CCI Subsonic Segmented Hollowpoints (1050fps). In 45 years of hunting rabbits I've never seen a 22LR round just drop them flat with just a kick out to 50+m on the range finder.

well , bit off topic, but you've got a reason to put in a pta for a 22mag . 40gn hollow points blow rabbits up ! :)

This mightn't be of any help, because we can't get ammo posted, but if you know someone in Qld...
We were in there Tuesday, and there are pallets of CCI cartons on Cleavers floor.

I have the 22 quiet segmented HP and I can buy the mini mag segmented HP locally. What I can't find anywhere is the subsonic 1050fps as my rook rifle is setup for this velocity.

They make segmented in the 22Mag which would be brutal.

Ah ok. Sorry bout that.
I did try the 40gn HP above, and yeah it's not quiet if that's what you are chasing.
I did find that the HP stuff in that ad shoots to the same POI as the 37gn HP Mini-mags without the segmented bullet, in my 452 and a favourite 77/22, but that's as far as I got. Unfortunately (actually, very fortunately) rabbits are very thin on the ground where we are and the dogs are missing out on their fave food lately so not many .22 rounds going downrange right now.

I tried pulling a few projectiles from the quiet to reload in some eley club. I've reloaded 22LR before however then using a collet to pull the projectile or pilers it just deforms or breaks apart. Shows you how soft those projectiles really are.

Best 22lr bunny basha ammo i have ever used for dropping on the spot and accuracy is Winchester power points orange box and winny subs in the white and the blue box all aussie made lucky I still have heaps .
Now I have tested cci hp subs kill quick as the subs from Winchester but in my 4 22 caliber rifles here occasionally they all go super sonic accuracy is only good for about 50 yards headshots only good out to about 30 to 40 .

Got a brick of the std 40gn CCI sub HP when they finally stocked them in Sydney shops.
They shoot well enough, but no real hunting access for me so untested.

The quiets also came to the shelves and are not too bad on paper at 50m, the segmented ones are not cheap, but will grab a brick.
A bit of vertical dispersion, but OK for hunting.

I have a brick or 2 of old Aussie-made Win 40gn HP subs, so still good for bunny busting if I ever do it again.
They always seemed to be effective, quick killers with chest shots on the limited numbers I shot.

I hate HV 22 rounds as who wants noise when it's just a bunny gun doing its thing.
The quiets are just amazingly quiet.

I only bought a case of CCI segmented HP's because my rifles shoot them nicely, identically to the Mini-Mags, primarily though because they were very well priced.
I had plenty of inkling when the C-19 insanity started to bite, that the cheap ammo days were going to be over.
We also got a case of Armscor HP's and subs too, and my wife and I just use them for practicing on the farm.

Just after Winchester announced that the Aussie ammo plant had closed, and Cleavers had crazy cheap prices for cases of the Aus HP and Sub Power Points, advertised as the "last good Aussie ammo ever" we grabbed a few cases of those, and it is that ammo we used for bunnies when there were enough of them around to bother to chase.
I did also get a few rabbits with the Mini-Mags and actually I'd rate the HP and Sub Aussie stuff hit with a big WHOP, bunny dead, as my favourite rimfire round.
In all our rimfires, it's a toss-up which shoots the tightest too. Those Aussie 40 and 42gn subs are incredibly consistent.
