Selling my ammo to my local gun store

Post by jovialjosie2002 » 06 Jan 2026, 12:04 pm

Hi,
I'm thinking of selling some ammo to my local gun store.
100 rounds 44 magnum ppu.
100 rounds 44 special magtech.
100 rounds of 12 gauge buckshot 9 pellet winchester.
100 rounds of 410 buckshot 5 pellets winchester.
Anyone got any idea of what price I'd get for each one?
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

50% of retail, $60 each for the 44 Mag & Spl, $115 for the 410 and $100 for the 12g.

And that's only if you're lucky you gotta remember they're a gunshot with licenses to protect you don't have a licence therefore you can't sell it

Has your dealer said that they're happy to buy it from you? I don't know any dealers that will buy ammo, but I have heard of somebody getting some store credit for some.

A few years back I sold some norinco steel case to them for $3/box....and they on sold it for $20/box. So I'm not that confident of getting a decent price for any of it.

44 special?

Don't see that very often. I always seen it costing more than 44 mag so defeats the purpose. At least 38 special is cheaper than 357 mag and readily available.

Yes as Blade said above does your dealer even
Want to buy it?

My ex wife bought me 30/30 ammo instead of 303. And the gun shop let me swap it out because I don't even own a 30/30.

3030 and 303 sounds the same to her. I bought you 30/30 like you told me she says. Thats strange because I don't even own a 30/30. I said buy 303.

She wants you to buy a .30-30, probably for her. You don't know how to take a hint ;-)

Divorce was the right choice in this case. Irreconcilable calibers.

And everyone needs a 30 30. It’s technically inferior to everything but it’s just such a joy to shoot.
Sell your 243 or 300 blackout and buy a 30 30 lever gun. You won’t regret it.

Interesting topic.
I dropped into a local shop yesterday afternoon and the owner took a call from a bloke trying to get rid of 3 guns and a heap of ammo, gunshop told him he couldn't/wouldn't be able to resell 2nd hand ammo so didn't want it.
Also said used reloading gear is a loss maker and virtually worthless.

I had once traded in a rifle that I no longer used, as a deposit on another firearm, and I also had had a heap of factory ammo that belonged to the said trade in. The gun shop owner gave me half the retail value of this ammo as it was all still packaged, off the purchase price of the new firearm. He stated that they had a section for "used" ammo provided it was still unopened and declared as such. I guess it just depends on who you deal with at the time of the sale.

With factory ammo you're better off finding somebody that can use it and see what it's worth to them, ask around your local clubs.

With reloading gear, unless it's something special, and he picks it up cheap (I'm sure most of this stuff gets dumped at dealers for free when somebody dies) it's not worth having it on the shelf. It's probably worth more to the dealer to take it and throw it in the bin so it doesn't end up as a starter kit for somebody thus potentially losing him a sale.

It's a shame hey.
I said to the gunshop owner, mate collect it and keep it for me. I know a few blokes who'd love a quality press and some bibs and bobs, but would never justify the crazy new prices and get their money back.
He said, enough cr@p is dumped here by people giving up shooting, no room. The phone is on fire from people scared of new laws coming in.
I said, "Mate, I'll come pick it up"
He says, "what, you expect it for nothing?"
I said, "but you just told me it's worthless and no worth the effort"
FMD. :unknown:
The more I hear of this, the less hope I have for people. They really will not stick up for themselves, of ever fighting for what's right. "Too much trouble"

I know that motorcycle wreckers will pay a pittance to somebody for a trailer load of bike parts only to toss them in the scrap metal skip. It doesn't make business sense to leave that stuff out in the marketplace where they might advertise it for free pickup and somebody might find a use for it instead of buying parts from the wreckers. I hate this business idea but financially it makes perfect sense. This is why it's so hard to find parts for restoring old bikes now, it all went to the tip because the market at the time wouldn't buy it.

I suspect any firearms dealer would be on a hiding to nothing buying unwanted ammunition from a shooter as there would be liability issues for the dealer alone if the 'secondhand' ammunition the dealer then sold didn't function correctly/safely.

Its worth it if you want to run low power or subsonics in a 44mag levergun but dont reload.
